If you are referring to an integrated Apple TV + LED panel solutuion then hopefully some time this year... if you mean a stand alone box then i doubt we will see one ever.

You don't think they'll release a stand alone box?

I believe the OP is referring to a stand alone since they refer to the product as Apple TV 3.

I think Apple will release a stand alone product after the introduction of an integrated Apple TV + LED. Based on recent rumors Apple is working on a 32" and 37" integrated solution. That's far too small and the product will be far too expensive for people to consider it instead of the sexy 55" from Samsung.

Just my opinion/hope that they upgrade and release a stand alone product.

A good time for it to come will be with the iPad 3. This is because:

i) the iPad 3 using the A6 processor will free up supply of the A5 to allow its use in a new ATV.

ii) Apple are pushing mirroring quite a lot and the ATV is key to this (and actually marketed as and iPad accessory)

iii) The iPad 3 (along with iPhone 4S) will probably be able to shoot 1080p video - so an ATV supporting 1080p makes sense

It wouldn't surprise me if by the end of this year all Apple devices have moved to 1080p (and possible the introduction of a new codec next year to cut file sizes in half for the same video quality)

Hopefully Soon

I've been waiting for an Apple TV with 1080p output capability before I buy. It'll probably require the A5 but that concerns me at the moment because without a jailbreak solution I won't be able to use the box for what I want to use it for (i.e. XBMC and SMB streaming direct from my Time Capsule.)

The wait continues...! ;)

I hope so! I'm buying an iPad 3 the day they are released and really want to pair it with an Apple TV.

We will see the apple tv 3 whenever iTunes store gets full 1080p content.

The apple tv 2 was aimed at iTunes streaming, stripped of the HDD and audio output set at 48 kHz it was always and still is a video streaming device with iTunes at the heart.

1080p is all dependant on when the networks allow this content for online purchase and rental.

imo
