The iTunes App Store is really booming right now. It has become and instant success and has propelled the iPhone far ahead of the rest in availability of apps. Possibly one of the most interesting and useful sections of the App Store is the Social Networking section. It actually has a lot of apps that people really use. These include Skype, Facebook, MySpace Mobile, Twitterific (other Twitter clients as well), Fring, LinkedIn, Shozu, etc. However, missing from the previous list is one of the most substantial sections in the category: instant messaging applications. AIM has offered both a free and paid version of their IM client for the iPhone for a long time now. ICQ has offered their client for quite a while as well and, today, Yahoo released their free Yahoo! Messenger client to the App Store. This leads me to my question... where is the Windows Live Messenger client in the App Store. Sure, IM+, Beejive, Palringo, and other integrated clients offer WLM functionality, but what could beat a potential native application for the popular client made by the actual company that controls it, which would be Microsoft. However, I feel that, once again, Microsoft has decided to be bullheaded and not release an official client for the popular product like their closest competitors have... In fact, even Hotmail would not work correctly on the iPhone until sometime within the last few months when Microsoft added POP3 suppport... So, without further rambling, my question is simply this: When will Microsoft stop fooling around with silly apps like SeaDragon, and start developing real productive applications for the iPhone like Windows Live Messenger or Office or............

True but I am not needing it at all. BeejiveIM is perfect for Windows Live Messenger and it works with all the other popular ones too.

I don't see what your problem is using superior apps like Palringo...I installed it a few days ago just for Messenger, works great. And your theory about Microsoft not supporting the iPhone is just plain wrong, MS has already released apps for the iPhone. And if I were Microsoft, I wouldn't have released one either...not until OS 3.0 when messages can get through while the app is closed.

So I'm guessing you're calling Seadragon a worthwhile app? You wouldn't rather see Microsoft apps like Office Mobile, Messenger, and Live Search Mobile come to iPhone. After all, Microsoft seems to think that Windows Mobile and Blackberry should have these devices, why not iPhone?

Maybe, rather than assuming it's cause apple has always been arival, it's because the Blackberry & Windows Mobile platforms have been around for sometime? and are therefore far easier to develop for than the iPhone, which is entirely alien to MS...

P.S. I do use the full (push-enabled (i'm guessing that starts with 3.0)) IM+ and it is fantastic. However, I would much prefer a Microsoft-based, more familiar looking Windows Live Messenger application. Also, by the looks of things so far, the free apps made solely for the independent IM client and by it's maker, run just as well and efficiently as only the paid third party apps do..... Someone earlier said they use Beejive and that it is sufficient. However, I'm pretty sure Beejive costs like $15!

I know this may not be completely what you want to hear.. But simply stop using Microsoft stuff, if you're not getting the level of integration you want on your key devices.

Microsoft "cloud" apps are weak to begin with. Who needs WML/Hotmail/etc when we have Google Apps & Skype which work perfectly on the desktop as well as iPhone.

You don't know how many times I've thought of doing this. I just have a few issues... first of all, my hotmail account is WAY too entangled in pretty much everything. It's where all of the important people know to email me, it's attached to everything I'm involved with on the internet, etc... etc.... now as for WLM, all my friends are using MSN so it would be hard to move to a different service. However, I am told that Yahoo Messenger will communicate with MSN people, but then again, if I am going to leave WLM, I'd really like to leave it for AIM, which is not compatible with MSN. So I don't know... I guess I'm too entangled in Microsoft services.?.?

I prefer having one app, like Beejive, running all my IM's rather than having a bunch of individual apps for each one.

Yeah, I think I would understand that too if I actually used more than one IM application. However, ALL of my friends are on MSN, so I'm pretty sure that means I'm stuck using Windows Live Messenger. :( On the iPhone/iPod touch, that means using a third party app.

Just use Palringo?

I have it on my iPhone and use it to chat with my MSN account and my google talk account.

I actually think its better than having an actual MSN app as I can sign into more than just MSN... I have different contacts on both so its pretty handy... though I have to say even if I only had an MSN account I'd still have no problem with palringo
