When you add contacts, do you leave the +1 before the area code?

I always take them off but the last one I added, I had to restart my iPhone so that it would match the name on Messages.

Yes, I leave the +1 in. Without it, the phone won't interpret the number correctly if you were to travel to an area with a different country code. It'll dial the number for that country instead routing to the US or Canada.
