And you hear them hitting the screen really hard, or worse, hear their nails hitting the screen...

Do you die a little on the inside?

Have you seen that video of the cat playing with the iPad. That would be far more disturbing. Human nails won't cause a scratch.

Having used iPhones for almost 3 years, only scratch I ever got was when I dropped it on a tarmac surface from a height over 4 feet.

I just set them straight and tell them the don't have to press, only touch. Most likely they're not iphone users and are not used to capacitive screens and think they have to press sort of hard. Once they figure it out they're ok and quit beating it up. I still worry about them dropping the damn thing, thought. It's slippery!

I hate it when they start going through my photos, emails, documents etc. as if it's perfectly all right for them to do so, and even if I've specifically asked them not to.

I've shown my iPad to several people and they've all loved it, but as the days have passed and I've put more and more personal stuff on it, I feel I have to stand over them, watching.

The obvious solution is to load up 'safe' apps and hand over the iPad, but the rest of my stuff is just the press of a big button away. I left a workmate alone with my iPad playing Warpgate for a minute yesterday and when I returned he was reading my emails!

Tell me about it. WTF is up with "pushing"? I mean I know the whole touchscreen thing is relatively new, but common, what're you pushing on? I guess what trips them up is that they keep their finger on the screen waiting for something to happen, when really the responsehp happens when you lift your finger off.

i let my nephews play with my iPad and they proceeded to download and play Tap Tap revolution. I was not happy watching them smashing away at the screen... but they were, so whatever.

I can't understand why Apple hasn't implemented some sort of options under settings where you can have the Photo or Mail section prompt the user with a password prior to launching the application. I can't lend out my iPad either because I have to worry about the exact same thing. Especially with personal stuff such as emails.

And with the preview of 4.0.. I don't believe this feature will be coming either. I don't quite understand it.

I really do die on the inside. I can't stand it. I'm overprotective. I know I'm just being a really annoying person, but I've started hiding mine from my roommates who use it without asking and get their greasy fingerprints all over it.

And almost the worst of it is that people get all weird about it when you indicate that, actually, no, you don't want them blithely paging through your doc, photos, emails, etc., thank you very much...

I first noticed this phenomenon when I got the iPod Touch years ago, and a fairly distant acquaintance started pawing through my photos right in front of me, again with the maddening air of somebody doing something that they had a perfect right to do. It's related to the novelty of the touch screen. They think that they're primarily exploring the device, and only secondarily going through your private stuff. I think the reverse.

Because of this issue my few days of showing people the iPad are now over. I'll be "forgetting to bring it with me" from now on, I think. Sad, really, as I've loved to see people's reactions to it, and England is still generally iPad-less, of course.

As you say we could do with (optional) blanket password protection for the key privacy-sensitive apps. Maybe some enterprising app developer could design an app that'd password-protect all the apps just on one particular screen, for example.

When I'm showing off my iPad, I kind of let others get the feel of what this device feels like in their hands in order to help them understand the full experience of this thing.

What it needs is multiuser support with different profiles.

You should ask for his wallet as collateral, then when he reads your emails, start copying down his credit card number, etc. (just kidding... maybe).

I lasted less than 24 hours before I drove back to Best Buy and bought the 1yr accidental damage plan. I figure the hundred bucks is worth me not acting like an ****** to my friends and family when they want to play around with it.:D

It doesn't really bother me, as long as the screen doesn't get scratched (which it hasn't).

My biggest concern is people going through my music, photos, mail... I usually tell them that any app in the Dock is off limits (WiFi doesn't work in school).

I know what you all mean in both areas. On the data front, most people I demo mine to either have or have played with iPhones, so they don't mind my not handing it over to them. :)

I've just seen an iPad journal app with optional password protection. I don't know why that isn't a standard optional feature on all but the most trivial apps.

What I really want is multiple login capabilities. However, if not that then at least a demo mode would be useful, similar to the Guest Account on OS X, where you can restrict the access a visitor could have, while not inconveniencing you (like having to enter a password every time you launch Mail), and not giving your guest any ability to mess anything of yours up (when you log them out everything would revert to as it was before "demo mode").
