Where are my badge icons?

I am using a MacBook Air M1 and I have never seen badge icons for any apps, despite "badges, sounds and banners" being turned on in the Notifications panel in System Preferences

I receive sound and banner alerts but no badge icons

Is this a known glitch? Anyone know of a workaround?

EDIT: naturally, immediately upon posting the above, I received my first Mail badge icon ever -- spooky

I can't speak for Big Sur or even M1's but on my devices badge icons sometimes don't show up, or they never clear.

And now I am getting badge icons on Mail, iMessage and WhatsApp

Indeed - something else I noticed was that my number is 6502 and tranceking26's number is 6502a

What is going on in here LOL
