I made a screen recording using the "cmd + shift + 5)" method in Catalina, edited the recording , and after I clicked "Done" , the video viewer/edit window disappeared. I have no idea where ( or if ) it saved my video clip.

I checked my Desktop since that is the default location for screenshots, but it isn't there. Where is the default save location for screen captures? If I can even get the file extension , I can search my system for it.

It cool that this tool is built in as I started a YT channel and need to start making content It just needs some addition user-friendliness.

FWIW - I just tried it (Catalina) and after clicking "done" it saved as a .mov to desktop which is where I have it set to save files in Options - maybe try resetting the default "Save to" location in options?

It saves to whatever you have set your "Save to" location. I just tested it as well, and it showed up on my desktop(my set location).

Thanks for the replies. The first time I tried the video recorder, I didn't press the save key and used escape to exit.

I saved it to my screenshots folder which I set using a command line in the terminal app. I didn't expect videos to go there, too. Now I know!

It saved the video clip as "Screen Recording {date time data}.mov". I'll probably convert the .mov to .mp4 or .mpv, though. I didn't realize .mov still existed!

Also, I noticed that the menu bar includes both screen capture and video capture, so I think it will be my go-to quick screen capture method going forward.
