It has been years since I bought my last Mac, so please forgive me if I sound ignorant... When I looked at the screenshots of the new Yosemite OS, it appeared to lack the familiar desktop icons such as Hard Drive, Documents, etc. All I see is the dock. Has Apple done away with desktop icons?

They are still there. You can choose to hide them but this has been in since maybe ML.
