Good for single player:

Kona's Crate
Where's my Water?
Storm in a Teacup
Reckless Racing
Trainyard

Good for multiplayer:

DrawRace 2
Super Stickman Golf
Lunar Racer
Temple Run (not multiplayer as such but can get very competitive to get the highest score)

And a +1 for Tiny Wings mentioned earlier.

Words With Friends
Infinity Blade
Infinity Blade 2
Chrono Trigger
Plants Versus Zombies
Zombie Gunship
Tiny Wings
Scribblenauts Remix
Earth Defender

these are the games I play:

Minesweeper
Solitaire
Peggle
GTA3
Sonic CD
Final Fantasy
Tetris
Angry Birds
Paper Toss
Spin Doctor

The Square games (Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger) have really ugly text boxes though. Not sure why the hell they did that. Chrono Trigger is probably best played on DS.

Can you just run a Nintendo emulator and just play Zelda or Mario?

I've never tried it on an apple device but I'm sure there is a way.

Temple Run is a game I play a lot.
Mega Jump is also pretty good I find, I also find it a lot easier to play the iPad even though it's not the full screen.
Diamond Dash is good if you have a Facebook account, good if you just want to just waste a few minutes at a time.

Sacred Odyssey from Gameloft is a decent Zelda clone ripoff.

I felt dirty playing it, but thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Also, Shadowgun, Deadspace, and Anomaly are top titles that didnt feel like dinky cellphone games.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 4s: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Starfront Collision. At least until Blizzard sues :-D

Just downloaded Jukebeat today, the US version of Jubeat by Bemani (Konami's music game division). If you like the other Bemani games (Beatmania, DDR, Para Para, etc) or games like it (Guitar Hero, etc), then this would be a good choice. My only gripe is the songs are super expensive ($1 each).

He has a point- all the games made for iPhone are just mindless casual games.

Where's the hardcore addictive stuff like they used to make in the 90's?

Fruit Ninja
Angry Birds
Angry Birds Rio
Fruit Ninja Puss n' Boots
Reckless racing
Doodle Jump
Chopper 2
Jetpack Joyride
Flight Control
Smash Cops
Real Racing 2

My favorites :D
