This may be a dumb question but where would my movies and shows be stored? In the Apple TV, Ipad, Laptop? How does it work? Does it stream from Apple or one of my devices.

too many variables to really give an answer.

apple tv 1 or apple tv 2?

essentially, with the apple tv2, you can stream from your itunes library to it. and with the airplay addition, you can play from your ipad/iphone to your apple tv.

I'm getting the new $99 one for Christmas. So it can stream from one of my devices or my library?

Yes, you'll be able to stream the items from your iTunes library(on a computer) and from your recent iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.

On the Apple TV they are store on the Hard drive.

On the Apple TV 2 (2010), they are NOT store locally, they are cached on Flash and read from the cloud or from another machine on the local network.

Well actually

On the aTV 1 they can be stored on the aTV HD but they can also be in your iTunes library and streamed, which works fine in a wireless 'N' environment. I have two aTV 1's and two aTV 2's and they work great, the only difference is that I have aTV Flash on the installed on the 1's as I am a MLB subscriber. I'm hoping the aTV ap store will include MLB when it opens ...

There are a lot of ways to store the actual files, for me i use a firewire EXT HD (4TB) connected to my iMac. This has worked very well, there are some who do not like the thought of leave their computer on. We have always left all of ours on over the years and so far there have been no issues.

I do the same thing with an external (1.5TB) containing my iTunes library attached to my iMac. We leave the computer on, but sleeping. If you have an Airport Extreme and Snow Leopard, you can have your ATV unit wake the sleeping Mac to get your music or movies when needed.

I have an original ATV and have never stored anything on the unit. I have always streamed from my iMac.
