where are the new 2.x icons for sms/email/etc?

ive seen screenshots of peoples' iphones ( i think it was on gizmodo or something) where they have email/sms icons that are placed in the taskbar near the battery and its used to notify the user for any new sms/emails. ive upgraded to 2.1, and im not seeing any icons.
