Flashback:

1984. board game based war/strategy games are common place. I play with friends, my brothers, etc.

1988. BBS' (bulletin board systems) were all the rage. Turn based strategy/war games made their appearance. You'd log on to the BBS and check to see if it was your move (or you made one move a day in some cases). Political intrigue and war on an electronic format!

1991. Turn based computer games come of age. Empire consumes a ton of my time, with me and my brothers taking a turn and then leaving the room for the next person to do the same

1994 - 2009. Flash, color, movement, and instant gratification takes over. Not that I'm complaining.... I love the stuff. But turn based war games take a back seat.

So I ask all of you.... I'm sitting doing my turn of Scrabble on the iPad last night and then waiting until my facebook buddies take their turn sometime today, and it hit me: we need some turn based strategy games for the iPad! Where are they and why haven't people produced them (especially for the iphone since it's been out for a couple years).

I mean people will sit there and play farmville and We Rule, which is essentially the same thing (quasi-real time).... but when I try to play them I'm wondering why I can't make alliances and invade other peoples' kingdoms.

We need some turn based strategy games that you can play vs other people over the internet for our iPads. It's the perfect venue for it.

I saw Command and Conquer in the app store, but that's about it for now...

I have wet dreams with a good conversion of Sid Meier's Civilization :D

I think we should wait a little to get good games in the iPad, every platform needs this time to have them.

Civilization : Revolution.

I got it for my iPhone and love it.

I couldn't wait for the iPad version...then...fail....$8 and all you get is a larger view. Nothing new added. No maps. Nothing.

Since my iPhone version plays at 2x view just fine...I'll wait till the price drops, they add features, or pro-rate it if you already own it.

I think devs are waiting for the iPad international launch. They're probably using this extra time to make their apps better.

One fear though. The iPad isn't fast so don't expect anything truly epic.

I was building one but it's on hold for now. It's a complex game type especially when you mix in multiple player over the internet. I originally was working on only multiplayer and then I changed it to only single player. It's complicated and in honestly im not sure the market is there to support it so I'm focusing on other areas for now.

They already exist for the iPhone, they are sure to come to the iPad (Rogue Planet, Wesnoth). Patience.

I'm not sure it really needs to be fast to do turn based stuff.

Real time? might strain the system if it's a monster.... but turn based stuff like RISK or Axis and Allies, or the old Empire game......

?
Just posted about Civ:Revo I have for iPhone. It's crazy fast on iPad.

Matter of fact the few games I have for my iPhone are silly fast on the iPad. I have the COD games and they run at <seemingly> 30fps.

Even the UNO game for iPad has fast card movement...and it's a day one release.

I think this could be another smart move by apple. If you use their SDK (which, like or hate the sandbox you will) it should have fairly clean code. I don't know what the resource overhead is with the iPad but I don't think it will be slow.

Heck...the XBOX is mid 90's technology...and their still writing games with that overhead that are 30fps.

I guess we'll just have to see...

Oh...almost forgot..

I d/l'd "WeRule" for the iPad. Turn based "Knights and Merchants" meets "Farmville" game. Stand alone or social turn based. Not bad and graphics are pretty good too.

Yeah I just keep wishing I could invade other kingdoms, send spies in, etc.

instead I get to see my peasants walk around aimlessly.... big whoop.

We're working on one for the iPhone, but after seeing how it looks blown up on the iPad I want to release a universal app with high-resolution graphics too.

It's a persistent online strategy game (an MMO, basically)... but it won't be ready until the summer. Sadly due to how long it's taking us, it'll seem less original than it was when we first came up with the idea.

Still sounds good. Keep us posted!
