Where are you getting mac games from?

There are a number of game titles out for mac I wouldn't mind a copy of, but what astounds me is the price - for C&C Generals which is pennies for a PC version, they will still charge £40 ($80) here in the UK for. Are you guys getting them from somewhere special on the net or are you just all filthy rich ?

As an aside, how could they charge more for the mac versions? Surely if they're releasing them on both platforms the core programming would be similar as well as all the meshes, levels and sounds.

It is a shame about the pricing, the developers want to make money back on their product, however their not going to do that by charging so much for older titles, thus the amount of people purchasing will be low.

Being the owner of an Intel Mac its cheaper to run Windows for the greater selection as well as the lower costs of games. Sad but true.

Yes, filthy rich ... I wish!

Since buying an iMac with 2600 HD card a few weeks ago, I've bought quite a few from eBay & Amazon. Even the occasional classic, still brand new & sealed, for under £10, for eg. "Age of Mythology".

I know they usually cost loads more than PC equivalents (for eg., "Imperial Glory" about £29.99 on Mac; on PC, new & sealed, about 3.49), but you should be able to sell them on for loads more than PC versions later on. At least, that's my justification.

No doubt I'll be Boot Camping it later on for PC exclusives like "Total War", "Gettysburg", etc. so my thinking on this might well change & switch to PC versions mostly. But for now, I'm sticking with Mac-native gaming where possible.

I know what you mean, but ever since I've moved to mac this easter, I've taken pride in not using a copy of windows. There's probably more second hand titles floating round in the US than in UK, too. Only one website here stocks C&C for mac.

I can appreciate that POV. I've had an iBook since 2006 but only got my iMac this June. But frankly, my original plan was to mostly Boot Camp it on the gaming side.

However, after buying "AoE III", "The War Chiefs" exp pack, "RoNations", "Imperial Glory" & "AoMythology" for Mac - & I've already decided I'll be getting the newly-released "Asian Dynasties" exp pack & also "AoE 2" in the next weeks - I doubt I'll be touching Windows for at least the rest of this year.

In fact, if there were more companies like MacSoft around & they were allowed to port Total War games & a few others, I'd probably never bother with Windows.

i get most of my mac games from gogamer.com or amazon. i usually check amazon first, the marketplace can have some great deals. gogamer usually sells things for list price or close, but every so often i'll find a good deal on a game there.

Amazon.com is my source for Mac gaming. The only other place I know to get Mac games is an Apple Store, and the closest one is an hour away.

"AoE III" runs great on my iMac at highest settings. No problems. IMO, it's quite outstanding for both gameplay & graphics - some people think the Mac port is better than the PC version. MacSoft have also addressed previous issues, such as lack of networking with PCs, with recently released patches. Most definitely worth buying!

Btw, you'll need "AoE III" before you can install "The War Chiefs" exp pack, but the latter addition is definitely worth getting. "Asian Dynasties" went gold a few weeks back, so it should be out any day as a standalone pack.

I can answer one of those questions.

AoE III Runs very well on my Macbook Pro 2.4. No lag or dropped frames or anything. I havnt had any hitches either. No glitching or anything. Now i don't really like the game! But that is besides the point.

starcraft is worth the money for sure. For the expansion and the original its just $20 and it works on mac and pc. The single player is ok but once you get online its really fun. I've been playing it for over a year and a half and only now am I starting to get bored.
I bought mine at eb games but if you don't have one of those nearby I bet futureshop has one or you can order it from ebay

As for other games warcraft sounds almost the same as starcraft but WoW (world of warcraft) is way too expensive. You can also order games from the apple store online , ebay or some other place on the internet. a lot of ps3/360 games are on mac now too.

or try ebay or any local websites that might sell games they are always cheap, used games are always in very good conditions and cheap like half price.
mac games always reach almost half as much as a pc game, not fair because most games are made for pc'z so when they make the mac version they spend more money to make them so we have to buy them more expensive unfortunately.

I buy from Amazon (if the discount is big enough) or local (non-Apple) Mac-friendly stores that I want to support. But I'm in the US.

I tried GoGamer once and got a nice discount on Quake Wars for OS X, but there was MUCH hassle involved (the purchase itself went wrong in their system, plus I got a broken disc and the return process was punitive, and then their customer service was terrible). I won't be using GoGamer again. (I got my disc exchanged by Aspyr luckily.)
