here and there
hello joes and joes,

my question is a simple one for those in the know, is WoW available for download, along with its expansions? i would search direct2drive or a similar site however i do not have access to those sites.

also, the trial of WoW, what does that include? i mean is it all of the content from all the expansions? obviously you wont have access to everything but is it all there in the download?

also, is there any benefit to downloading the series vs the discs? can i get the downloads cheaper than if i buy all the discs?

If you have a Blizzard account you can download the World of Warcraft game client from there.

Download it from Battle.net. You'll need to sign up for an account to do this. I believe the trial version will download all the expansion data, although since Cataclysm comes out later tonight, I'm not sure if that'll be ready yet as trial, but it probably will. There's no discount for downloading over physical DVDs, it's just easier (especially now that the application can stream new content in the background while you play). Your account keys for all your games are kept on Blizzard's servers now. If you're going to download it, I'd start the process ASAP as the servers will be hammered through this weekend at least, it's normally a huge download and it may be even slower than normal (but maybe still faster than going out and finding a store with a copy).

can you quote me a price for the game through bnet? anything with "game" in it i cannot access online. i can however access amazon and there is a sale on blizzard games today. $19.99 for wow and expansion 1. expansion 2 is $19.99.

I don't know whether this is still current, but a few days ago Blizzard was offering the game and its first two expansions together for $20.

ok good news. this amazon sale isnt anything special then. i do like having discs tho.

You almost might as well download it from them. Even if you install from the discs you still then have to download a patch.

Also if you do get the discs, you only have install from the Lich King disc (or Cataclysm if you get that). The only reason you purchase the prior ones is for the CD-keys. If you really want the discs for installation only, purchase World of Warcraft, Burning Crusade, and Lich King digitally as the Cataclysm disc is the only one you'll actually use.

yeah so i can get 3 keys from blizzard for 20 or 2 keys from amazon for 20?

what happens if i get the trial and then want to continue the trial, is that 20 to unlock the whole thing?

To play, you only have to unlock the barebones World of Warcraft. You will get access to humans, dwarves, night elfs, gnomes, orcs, trolls, undead, and tauren. You will not have access to any content after level 60 which would be Outland, Northrend, and possibly some of the newer zones but those are meant for level 80+.

Burning Crusade would be the next purchase which would give you access to Draenei and Blood Elves along with Outland which is the level 60-70 area.

Lich King would give you access to the level 70-80 area and the Death Knight class.

Cataclysm would give you access to all the new stuff coming out in 8 hours, including goblins and worgen and the new 80+ zones.

You can upgrade your trial to a full account at any time but those are the order to purchase things in. There are some other things you won't have access to if you don't buy everything but those are the main things.

think i was to get the base game which comes with 30 days for free right? say i get all 3 games all at once, that is only 30 days free right? not 30 days for wow, then 30 for burning, then another 30 for lich?

i think i know the answer to that. i may just get wow and then when im level enough get burning and so on. just for the free 30 days. :D

assuming the expansions come with 30 days when purchase separate.

I just added a boxed copy of Cataclysm to my account and it didn't give me any free game time. I'm pretty sure that only the original game has the free month.

that sucks. know of any sites where i can get info on these expansions? as a new player i doubt they offer much so i want to know what i will miss if i start without them? besides the races and classes, are there items or lowly zones for new players only available in the expansions? thanks.

You'll only miss the race-specific zones (eg. Gilneas for worgen, Eversong for blood elves, etc). The "normal" low-level zones will still be playable if you don't have the expansion and you'll be able to get to level 60. Basically, if you don't need access to the new races then you shouldn't have any problems until you hit level 60 and run out of stuff to do :)

ok thanks for the replies, this was a time sensitive question. so much thanks.

its looking like i will go with blizzards deal and buy the last expansion when i need to. either way im not playing them until next year sometime.
