iPod Where can I return an ipod with no receipt?

I received a 4Gb Ipod Nano as a gift, along with a Nike Sport kit. I already have the exact same products, so I was hoping to return the two items to an Apple store for credit. (I can't let the person who gave me the gift know I am doing this since they will feel terrible they got me somethign I didn't need!)

No go they said-despite the fact that UPC/price stickers are on both unopened packages, they scanned it and said it wasn't purchased from them.

Is there ANY store I can return this gift to with no gift receipt, and get a credit?

Why not just sell it? You should be able to get near full price for it considering it is opened and never used.

On a side note, surely if you let the person who bought them know they will feel better/happier to help you get something you really want than sneaking around behind their back. It's an honest mistake to make.

You should probably just list it on ebay, or wait till you have 100 posts and put it up on the marketplace here.

There may be a chance target will take it for you, but I don't know for sure that they stock nike+ kits.

You can return it to the Apple store for credit as long as the box is not open. I have done this twice now and both times they were more then happy to issue a credit for the unopened box.

Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time with ebay or trying to sell it.. go directly to Apple.

WAIT! just reread your post... they said NO?? That doesn't seem right. I have done this twice but.... Once at christmas when I received a duplicate iPod (my wife won one at a company party and she also purchased me one from amazon). And the other was an iPod shuffle, given to me as a gift few years ago and then again at my birthday. Both products were unopened and in perfect condition... now the question is if the two returns had been purchased from apple... I might have kept the amazon one so the answer might be yes.. so I guess to make a short post longer, I have never tried to return something not from apple to apple.

(RETURNING is different, because it is a net zero for them. But if they didn't sell it in the first place, then it's not a 'net zero'. For all they know, you bought it from some super-discounter and you're actually making a profit. Or, even worse, you stole it from one store, and are 'returning' it to a different store.)

As for stores not taking items that they did not sell, this is not always true. I personally know plenty of stores that will take back goods in hopes to gain your business, my local Apple store for example. Typically these are smaller chains or mom and pop shops but not always... walmart for example has taken product back from me, target also. Not all store owners or store chains think that you are out to get them.

Well if you want to lie a bit you can tell the person that gave you the stuff that it didn't work if they give you the receipt you can "exchange" it

You're kinda in a pickle if you don't want to ask for the receipt. Most places I know require receipts for all transactions, even exchanges. Before you hop on eBay and take a risk like that i'd just make a round of calls to different electronics dealers in your area just to ask about their return policy, you may luck out and find one that will take your iPod.

Have you considered that the gift giver might be even more hurt even more to know that you discarded their gift. You should just talk with them, be honest and forget about sneaking around. You will be surprised, I am sure they want you to be happy and know that they spent their money well. It is stupid to always think that we will hurt the gift givers feelings... I stopped this as of last year, if I have something or got a duplicate or didn't want it I am polite and appreciative but honest.. sometimes making a joke to lighten the air.

best thing you can do is ebay it, or actually use the second ipod for different instances (one on another post)

e.g. Work and play...: traveling to/from work and working out
etc. The list goes on...

what you do with it is your choice...

I would guess Apple takes a harder line because returns of your sort (no receipt) are the largest source of fraud/theft. They obviously are tracking things to prevent this. Go somewhere that doesn't.

Best buy and walmart do not require a receipt but because a nano is kind of a lot of money they might not accept it. The thing is your so close to X-mas that you can use that excuse. I wouldn't wait much longer tho. I was kind of banned from returning things to best buy without a receipt because I did it with like 10 things

I have a better suggestion. Tell the person who gave you the gift to return it for cash, and then invest the proceeds, plus any other money you both have in shorting the market--heavy on banks, REITs, and, say, Chrysler and GM. Tell him you just have inside information that sometime around, say, October, the markets are going to crash, and you'll clean up. Tell them all you want for your birthday, instead of a Nano, is 25% of his profits.

Take all the proceeds and invest it in Apple stock, which you should hold for the next four years. I'm willing to bet you'll quadruple your investment.
