Clearly there's something wrong. Did you add any third-party things like RAM? If so, remove and see if that helps. If it doesn't help, call Apple...you have 90 days of phone support. They'll take care of you.

Taking a stab in the dark here, but are you using Word? I bet it installed some fonts that are causing this. Do a forum search, there's a thread or two about it.

Since your machine was built-to-order, you can't really return it. But Apple should and will fix things for you. Call them again when it freezes up and insist that they help you out. Be polite, but firm. This isn't normal machine behavior.

Ahh!

I just installed Word along with some other Office 2004 stuff tonight. I hope it doesn't start mucking things up.

Are you talking about the beach ball running endlessly or what?

What applications did you have running and how many?

Once you installed any software, did you repair permissions?

Was your system fully up to date? All OS and security updates and
updates to any of your application software?

Does your system profiler show your extra RAM?

Have you moved any files from where they belong or to where they do not belong?

Your problem sounds software related, but could be a loose connection too.

Can you recreate what happened while running your Activity Monitor utility?
This might show you what's hanging up.

Don't switch back! it is true, macs are very stable but once and a while there are lemons (like, apparently, you iBook). Believe me, there are ALOT more lemons (eh... They all are) in the PC world. Ask for a supervisor next time you call and explain the problem and that you called twice before. Tell them about the squeaking issue. They will do something to help you. (search the forums, they are replacing people's iMacs that have slightly misaligned LCD's - nothing vital to the operation of the computer, there is just more border on one side than another! And they are replacing them!)

Have you deleted or disabled duplicate or corrupted fonts (you should - use Font Book in your Applications folder).
Did you install any Norton stuff? (get rid of it)

(I had problems with both of these when I first bought my Powerbook).

Somebody else here had a problem with a USB ADSL modem - causing crashes.

Good luck.

thanks so much for all your replys...i reinstalled mac os x software and it seems to be running fine now. the apple guy said the magnet inside the computer could have gotten screwed up while it was beein shipped and reintsalling the software should fix it...so far he was right. Sometimes you get lucky and a knowledgable person answers the phone.

Easily understand your frustrations, but hang in there. i've had 2 macs (looking for a 3rd) and they rarely crash, they're easier to use, look nicer and the overall funcationality is much better than a pc. Also, as you may have just noticed, the MAC community is very close - we always try to help each other out. Search these boards and also the boards at http://www.apple.ca/suport. i've only had maybe 5 issues (minor thankfully) which went unanswered in 4 years.

congrats on the ibook! enjoy!:)

Happy endings seem to be the rule, though there are exceptions which prove that rule. Anyhow, it's nice to see that AppleCare helped out. I've only used my APP once, to replace the CRT in my wife's eMac, and it was totally worth it...would have cost way more than the extended warranty, and I was into 2005 when that 2003 eMac needed work

In my experience, the only time my computer beachballs is when I used Office, doesn't matter what program, excel, powerpoint, word...makes me
hate the manufacturer of Office even more.

Now I don't use any product by the Redmond, WA corporation...and as a result, my computer hasn't beachballed since.
