Just the other day I was trying to setup Mail with a few of my email accounts. Problem was once I clicked on the Mail icon, all it did was bounce once and a question mark appeared on top of it. I then dragged the Mail icon off the dock, and now I cant find the program anywhere on my comp. Never had a problem with this before, and I'm too lazy to reinstall it off the OSX CD since my copy of iLife 08' is coming in in a few days. Anyone have any ideas what just happened? This is on a new SR MBP and was the first time I tried to access Mail on this comp, and I know for a fact I didnt uninstall it or anything.

Not in your Applications folder at all?

Type it into Spotlight, might be hiding from you.

nope not in applications. I used Spotlight and all I found was the Mail.pkg and a few Mail folders. I tried the Mail.pkg setup but installation fails every time.

You gonna need to put in your OSX CD and install it from that (I think you can anyhow, never tried, worth a shot).

No one can upload their Mail application for you to download because it contains their email account info.

interesting, if you didnt delete it, something else did..argh

anyways, pop in your Mac OS X Install disc one, and choose Install Bundled Software (i think that includes Mail.app, am I right?)

[EDIT]: ARGH!....

yeah I thought it was pretty weird too, but I'm not too bothered by it at the moment, just a bit interested as to why the application just disappeared. I'll be using Thunderbird for now. anyone know exactly how I can reinstall Mail? I dont want to pop in my OSX CD and end up rewriting all my files or something.

You wont rewrite your unless you choose to do so. Once it loads up (dont reboot, just wait until it appears on your desktop). double click it, and choose "Install Bundled Applications only" or something like that (the package icon).
That should do it.

Or call applecare and tell them whats happening and if there's any way you can download the software.

Put in OSX CD 1. Wait for it to appear on your desktop.

Open it up, and select Optional Installs. Specify what you want to install.

okay thanks everyone, I'll give that a try later. even though i probably wont use it, I'd still like to have it installed just in case.

how is Mail compared with Thunderbird though?

I've used Thunderbird for a while, was good but then started using Entourage (part of the MS Office 2004 package) and it was a memory hog and not very quick (considering it as a PPC app and is being run on Rosetta).

Finally switched to Mail after I discovered a good plugin to get Hotmail support. Works so well, isn't a memory hog either.

Runs in the background, and when I get an email, I click Mail and it opens right away (the Mail app was running in the background but hidden), unlike Entourage which took about 4 seconds to appear.
