Suddenly tonight, my iPhone's sound doesn't work properly. With the headset, everything works perfectly. However without it, I can hear speakerphone and my ringtone from the speakers but no vids, music, alerts, or anything else. I restored my phone and reset the settings all to no avail.

Anybody have a clue on what I should do now?

I just had the same problem, it just started today. There isn't any sound coming out of the speaker where your ear goes. Making calls with the headphones work and so does speaker phone. I just finished restoring mine too and that didn't help. I have no idea what is going on.

Well I just called 1800MYIPHONE and they said either to go to an apple store to get the phone sent in and repaired or to send it in yourself. He said if you did the reset and restore then it is a hardware problem

My earpiece speaker started cracking and popping then all the sudden went out. I had taken advice from others who were able to plug in and unplug the earbuds repeatedly. This during a call or listening to a voicemail.

I was able to get mine to work after a few attempts, although the earpiece only worked for about 20 seconds. After several times of this, I sent my phone in.

It is my understanding the "switch" either mechanical or software, is seeing the earbuds plugged in. I had even restored and updated thinking it was a software issue and that would fix it, nope.

Send it in.

same here. Everything works fine when using head phones. without, no sound on SMS, Keyboard, Mail etc. Ringer still works for some reason.....

Woot Fixed it. I plugged in the headphones and rotated it. Unplugged and sound came back.

I have heard the same thing. I guess it is replacement time for the OP.

This is the fix, and it has been driving me insane. A power cycle used to fix this, but today, it did not. I have noticed that the sounds disappear after unplugging the phones while the iPod is paused. If the phones are removed while the iPod is playing, everything works as advertised. In my opinion, this is a firmware/software based issue.

I'm thinking the headphone trick is a temporary fix. There has to be a more pressing problem. I was shipped a new phone from Apple, so I'm guessing it is something that may take some time for them to fix.

On a good note, Apple did overnight shipping for me. Sent it off on Monday (FedEx overnight on Apple's bill, hehe), tuesday had an email saying the phone would be replaced, and it arrived the next morning. Can't complain at all with that service. It was shipped to, and new one from, Fort Worth TX. I'm only around 6 hours away though...

My macbook pro did that for a while, it was fixed by CAREFULLY alcohol and q-tipping the inside of the headphone jack, and switching headphone brands, the old "iPod style" earbuds seemed to leave a lot of residue in the port, which may have conducted enough to trick the laptop into thinking the headphones were still there.

Hearing about the headphone trick, and people cleaning out the jack makes me wonder if it is either a physical or a software problem, or somehow possibly both. I really hope its a software problem that can be fixed in a new update...

New iPhone

Just bought an iphone in Jan 08; and I'm having the same problem with unplugging headphones and losing speaker for phone application. Sounds like Apple has NOT fixed this issue
