Siri was a spinoff from SRI (a research institute), so I'm guessing the name is at least partly a play off of SRI.

I thought it was just the name of the company that Apple bought and they used them to help build Siri

The name of the company that made it was SRI but they named it Siri which is a much better name than if they had called it Sri :p.

It turns out that the company Siri was founded by Dag Kittilaus from Chicago who is half Norwegian. He wanted to call his first-born child Siri, but since he got a son (and Siri is a female name) he gave the name to his business instead. The name Siri means "beautiful victory", by the way.

Siri History - My Idea

Siri. I believe was derived from an artistic impression I had when I was a young lad of 17 years old. I came up with the character "SURICAN" an noble surfer capable of conquering any challenge on or off earth. This was 23 years ago... Now suddenly Siri is in a limelight for performing any task asked of it.

You wish you could take credit for it, nice try.

Did he fly around on a silver surfboard and occasionally hang out with the Fantastic Four?

I actually have another idea :p The word Syria in French is Syrie and it is read quite similar to Siri... maybe Jobs wanted to "refer" to its origins (his biological father is Syrian)
