Hello. I recently helpd a friend up grade from Jaguar to Panther, and now we have abit of a problem. The Utlities Folder in Applications does not conatin any of the cool things that it should. Like Disk Utility and the CPU monitor and all the other goodies. Is it simply hidden somewhere else or did it some how not get installed? Is there anything I can do to install these again? I hear pacifist is a good program to try, and I did, but I did not find all the little aps that should be in the Utlities folder. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Urgh, you're in a bit of a stick. Is there anything in the utilities folder? If "Software Restore" is there, then you can run that and follow the instructions to put your utilities back, otherwise you'll have to run an install from the discs again to get the Utils back. Sorry man.

Look for similarly named utilities. Some of them changed names in Panther. I believe Activity Monitor and Disk Utility are the new names for what you're looking for.

Disk Utility and the other apps or their successors are in my Utilities folder. They are exactly where I expect them to be. Perhaps you or your friend removed them from his computer.

Perhaps I am looking in the wrong spot. I would expect to find them under
MACHD->Applications->Utlities. However there is nothing there. I was able to restore "Disk Utility" and "Installer" with Pacifist, but that is all. And no we have not removed them. They were there in Jaguar, and worked just fine. ( We used the disk utility to repair permissions before the upgrade so I know they were there.) I have also tried searching for these applications on the HD and the install CD to no avail. Would it be possible to just move them from another computer and have them work? Similiar to other apps.
Ugh today has been the computer day from hell. Thanks for the input everyone, I appreciate it. Oh yeah one last question, if I have to reinstall, should I archive and install or just delete everything and do a clean install form Panther?

I think what he was asking is whether there is anything in there at all or if it's totally empty? Some of the Utilities got new names in Panther, and some of them got merged into one application.

I don't wan't to be an "I told you so"--because I didn't tell you anything and it's annoying--but things like this are a good reason to do a clean install or an archive and install. Every problematic Panther install I've seen has been an upgrade.

In case it helps, here's a list of everything in my Utilities folder:

Activity Monitor
AirPort Admin Utility
AirPort Setup Assistant
Asia Text Extras
ATI Utilities
Audio MIDI Setup
Bluetooth File Exchange
Bluetooth Serial Utility
Bluetooth Setup Assistant
ColourSync Utility
Console
DigitalColour Meter
Directory Access
Disk Utility
Grab
Installer
iPod Software 1.3.1 Updater
iSight Updater 1.0.2
Java
Keychain Access
NetInfo Manager
Network Utility
ODBC Administrator
Printer Setup Utility
Software Restore
StuffIt Expander
System Profiler
Terminal
X11

Of course, these may vary depending on your system.

Thanks to everyone for the help, esp. Nermal and OutThere. I was able to take the utlities folder from another Mac and send it on over, and after a few Repair Permissions tries we got everything to work. I am at peace with the computer now, untill the next episode anyways. Thanks again everyone.
