there
today while downloading Monterey on a 2010 MacBook air, i plugged in a ethernet chord to speed up the process.
when that happened, the download vanished, but i have 7-8 gb in my drive somewhere,
which was no tin downloads, apps, and nothing came up in a "Mont" or "upgrade" search
ONXY is looking fo this file as well.
there is a bunch of extra GB in the system part (59GB) of the manage part of "about this mac"
this happened around 4:12 EST and i am 6'2" tall if that info helps.

thanks in advance!

Look into /System/Library/AssetsV2/ it's probably in /System/Library/AssetsV2/com_apple_MobileAsset_MacSoftwareUpdate/

Try from Terminal to find dmg or pkg files with a size greater than 100MB
sudo find /System/Library/ -type f -size +100M -name "*.dmg"
sudo find /System/Library/ -type f -size +100M -name "*.pkg"

And if ^^^that does not work, might try that without the -name option (on chance that the download is not coming down with either extension, similar to Safari downloads "file.dmg.download" when downloading).
