where do you buy software?

what is your preferred place (online, in store, and specifics) to buy software? i'm think specifically of graphics/design/video software, but also games and other stuff.

also, does anyone buy generation old software? e.g. buying adobe CS1 when CS2 is out? are there stores that sell these? or do you have to go through ebay or something (which i'd imagine would be sketchy)...?
 
I would have to say I either buy my software from Amazon or from Best Buy. Amazon is typically cheaper for a lot of things but I have a Best Buy near me so when I need something _now_ I drop by.

For games I usually go to EB or Gamestop. Most of the time they know their stuff and are pretty helpful.

As for your second question I would think Amazon would carry products like this.

Amazon usually. Occaisonally best buy, but that's usually a spontaneous versus a planned purchase

for older verions, amazon as well. There's a good chance they'll have it
 
These days mostly the Apple Store on Regent St., unless it's something where you download it, like OmniGraffle or WireTap Pro.

Before the Apple Store, I used to go to Micro Anvika on Chenies St. a lot.

Yep same here or my girlfriend is a college professor and gets deals when vendors come in and want "extra" sales during the slow times. When I went to buy Studio 8 last year I got an excellent buy from Academic Superstore and free shipping if I could wait a week which I did. I guess that's where going to be an art teacher will pay off, getting a discount on SW but somethings on that site will say everyone can buy with no proof of ID. Just gotta watch for those sales ;)
 
usually studica for big things and if theyre downloads the company's website. though i've bought a couple things from newegg.
 
just as a test i checked for photoshop cs1 on amazon... i can get it for 540 (vs. 699 for the new one)... not as big a discount as i'd like, though it makes sense to sell it for more than the new one minus the upgrade price.

but what i don't get, is how some people are charging 50-100 bucks MORE than the new one! haha. and i bet some sad sucker will buy it too


most of the software i buy is apple, so i get it online or in one of the apple stores. trying to gauge what all software i need to buy and how much i can expect to spend.... ahhhhhhh
 
I think I've bought a total of maybe four pieces of software that weren't downloadable in the past two years. Two from my University bookstore, one from Apple direct, and one from CDW.

Now, this doesn't mean I don't buy software--I've bought at least four different things just this month... but every single one all I did was pay for the registration code for the download. Seems really silly to have to deal with a physical piece of media in this day and age for anything that isn't HUGE (say, iLife, which is several gigs with all the iDVD and Garageband stuff). Heck, even for CD-sized software, I'd rather buy a download and burn it myself if necessary than wasting time and resources on a box and shipping.
