I downloaded iOS 9.2 on my Mac running El Capitan, but cannot find where the file is located. I know that it has an *.ipsw file extension, but can't find it anywhere. I tried looking in ~/library/application support...nothing there. Can someone please help me find where the file downloaded to?

Try: Finder -> Go -> Go To Folder -> ~/Library/iTunes

Should take you right to it.

Checked there…9.2 file was not there.
Stating the obvious, but you plug in your phone and in iTunes you clicked update/restore depending on what you are trying to do, and let if fully download right? Once it installs on your device, it moves itself to the trash.

Here is what happened
1. Plugged in my new 6S
2. iTunes prompts me for an update
3. I select "download and update"
4. iTunes starts downloading 9.2
5. iPhone gets stuck on a "slide to upgrade" glitch (download still has not completed)
6. Unplug the iPhone and do a restart
7.plug the iPhone back in
8. Now, iTunes prompts me again for an update
9. And now step 2 thru 7 are in a constant loop

The 9.2 update takes 2 hours to download and I think the iPhone timesout.

Because its not fully downloading and timing out, there won't be a file created. If the download does not complete, it just erases it from memory. Try downloading it from here: http://www.redmondpie.com/download-ios-9.2-final-links-for-iphone-and-ipad-ipsw/

Once downloaded, you can do the command+update option for iTunes.

Try ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates/
This is already what I told the OP, minus the 'iPhone Software Updates' part. If there is no file for the update, then that folder will not exist. That way going to just ~/Library/iTunes - It will take you to the entire folder, where the subfolder would be if a file existed.

I had the same thing happen to me awhile back, believe it or not it was the Lightning cable. I switched cables and it updated without a hitch. That was after 2 hrs of banging my head against the counter. Hope that helps
