iPod Where in UK to fix iPod?

I haven't used my iPod Classic for a long long time, but got it out to use on a recent trip. It all seemed fine until I tried playing a song. It just sat on 00:00 for a moment, then the Apple logo came up. The ipod then restarted - and the fault was

Genius Bar - they said it's 'probably' a faulty hard drive.

Their repair/replace options are crazily expensive, so I was wondering whether anyone had any repair solutions (I am not at all handy - I will need to send it somewhere if it is worthwhile!)

Thanks for any suggestions.
 
The iPod Classic uses a hard drive more like the one in your computer, so it's more prone to failing (because of the physical parts). As to finding places for repair, probably anywhere that's an Authorised Apple Service Provider perhaps - you can trust them more than just a random shop.
 
have you dropped it? It may be the hard drive failing. But you could try and restore it.
If it's really the hard drive your screwed.

Those hard drives are expensive. and if anyone but apple opens your ipod it will most likely be all dented.
 
I'm not sure what the UK pricing for repair is - at the NYC Apple store they told me it was $179. Or I could take 10% off the price of a new iPod.

That's crazy prices... the hard drive must cost in the region of $80 to a consumer. Plus, the new iPod costs only $225 with the discount, so not a very green policy either!!

It's a shame - I haven't used the ipod in a long time, but would use it every now and again. Not sure at that sort of price that it is worth fixing, though. It can join my bag with two other iPods with a broken hard drive. I'm happy to stick with flash drive storage from now on.
