Is that because you don't think a good artist deserve compensation, or because you don't care that much how your desktop looks?

None of the above, for starters I dont like Digitalblasphemys...well design. 3d rendered images just look tacky IMO, there will always be free nice wallpapers around. My favourites include. dlanham.com, deviantart.com, mandolux.com, twistedsun.net, interfacelift.com and a couple of others and I just find it stupid to pay for a wallpaper. If I ordered a print then thats a different story but a wallpaper...? Nope. :p

Edit: Typo

Actually..I have to take that back, some of the designs are rather nice. But I still wouldnt pay.

I agree that there are many nice wallpapers around, but I think that some compensation for the artists is valid. I've used just about all of David Lanham's backgrounds, as well as a couple of icon sets. I sent him a thank you note and a couple of dollars, just for the hard work and hopefully to encourage him to continue putting out good free downloads. He wrote back the same day to say thanks, btw. It's the first time I've actually clicked on someone's paypal donate button, but I thought it was worth it in this case.

I don't really see why it'd be stupid to pay for a wallpaper. I've never paid for a wallpaper because I don't care that much about it. It's usually hidden. My current desktop looks as in the attached image.

But if I did care a lot about my desktop and found a wallpaper that I really liked, I'd want to show my appreciation by compensating the talented person that created it, obviously with a lot of effort and thought going into it. This shouldn't be affected by the availability of freebies, or whether the artwork is printed or not.

I just dont pay for wallpapers...simple as that. It gets changed every two days at least. I agree that a good artist deserves compensation and I really wouldnt mind a Lanham print and I would pay for it. But I wont be paying for wallpaper. Again...this is just my opinion. If mandolux turned into a pay-site Id stop visiting. His wallpapers are amazing but Im not paying for ít.

One good place to go is do a search on Google Images. Search for your screen res. and it gives you loads of pics that are the right size for your screen.

In Macrumors Picture Gallery forum there is a new thread every month for people to post their desktops. Many of them also include links to were you can download the wallpaper.

August thread

Interface Lift is good. I also like PixelGirlPresents.com. Another source I use is the MR's monthly threads and just ask people for a link to their's. :D
