My laptop hard drive recently failed, so I replaced it with the 13" MBP and when i logged in to iTunes, my purchased songs weren't there. Is there something that I can do to get my music and videos back? That's like over 300 bucks worth of media.

Did you have a backup?

The files are stored on the hard drive, so if that one failed and you don't have a backup - they are gone.

If you didn't have a backup, your media is gone. That's what happens when a hard drive dies. :(

Sometimes Apple will OK a re-download of your purchased items if you contact iTunes Support. You can try that route.

I guess this is what I'll have to do. Thanks for the help everyone. *pissed*

This is why you need to back up! Unfortunately, most people don’t take backups seriously until their hard drive fails, when it’s too late. Happened to me

It’s really easy though. Just pick up an external HD with a decent amount of storage and plug it in, then when it asks if you want to use it for Time Machine, choose yes. After you let it do an initial backup of your whole HD (which can take awhile), you won’t have to think about it any more. Just make sure you either leave the backup drive connected or at least plug it in once in awhile.
