When I connect my iphone to itunes the main screen (for most people anyway) displays the phone number assigned to that iphone.

Mine doesn't.

Anybody know why?

Thanks, everyone.

Mine is the same. It has never been displayed in iTunes - always says n/a.

I think the problem with UK iPhones is that the phone's number is not stored on the SIM. I read somewhere that if you put the SIM into another phone that will allow you to set the "My Phone" details then it will show correctly in iTunes. I don't have another phone that will work with an O2 SIM so I can't try it unfortunately...

I have an unlocked iphone i put in my orange sim and itunes recognized my orange sim's number. Then when i put back my att sim in itunes it was still the same lol. Plus the phone wasnt jailbroken :D If it wasnt for that activating screen life would be so simple. One more thing my phone is from the US on att i only unlocked it because i travel alot.

I get it now. I pop the SIM out and drop it into any old Nokia that allows you to store numbers on the SIM and put a single entry on it called 'My Number'. I'll try that soon!

Or even 'My Phone'! I've tried that now and the number is not shown anywhere on the phone. I haven't synced yet, so not sure if that will help.

Now I've synced, but still no luck. I've got 'My Phone' and 'My Number' in my SIM card.

Duh!
I've found out that the area the phone number needs to be stored in (on the SIM) is 'special' area that O2 don't usually use.
To get a number in there, I need to drop my SIM into a phone that has the functionality to allow the storage of a number into this special area of the SIM.....or some other way of doing it (software, magic key sequences etc).

Eureka! At download.com, I found a lovely bit of software called SIM Manager 2 from a company called Dekart - which works with card readers (which my laptop just happens to have). One download, an old SIM card plastic holder (the thing that you press the actual SIM out of) and some sticky tape, later - I've managed to get the software to read the card.
It shows 3 empty 'Own Number' areas so I added 'My Phone' into one of them, wrote the changes to the card and Bingo! Phone number showing in iPhone. Not synced yet, but now I can't see why this wouldn't work. I am very happy!
