Under the sun
I'm backing up everything important on my hard drive on to CDs before my hard drive fails (click here for more information: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/216207/)

Well when I insert a blank CD it doesn't appear on my desktop. I thought it was supposed to. The computer recognizes it, at least itunes as I burned a song on to it, but the CD doesn't appear in the itunes sidebar either. Well it shows up after I burn a song but how do I delete the song? I tried just deleting it, but it said I don't have sufficient permission. I don't have an external hard drive. Help! I'm guessing I can't delete because it's CD-R? but it won't recognize it without itunes so I don't know what to do. Can I only put music on a CD? I thought it could hold documents too. I tried putting documents on it but nothing happened at all. Any advice is appreciated.

just an idea- why don't you just get a firewire external and put all the data on there?

In a nutshell, here's how you burn data to CD in stock OS X

Open Disk Utility
Create a new disk image somewhere on your hard drive
mount the image
copy the files to your new disk image
burn it to CD-R using Disk Utility

Or you could buy Toast.

1. Open System Preferences
2. Click on CD & DVD's
3. Set writable CD/DVD's to open in Finder
4. ??????
5. PROFIT!

Just a guess.

A CD-R is just writable and not re-writable and you can't burn onto it again after you've done one burn. And yes a CD holds files also and if you haven't changed the mac os x settings (you'll want to quit iTunes before you put the disc in) it should ask you what to do with the new CD-R once you put it in. You'll want to say "open in finder" and then it will show up on the desktop so then you double click on it and drag and drop all the files you want onto it and hit the burn button in that finder window.
