Where is the file-system, printing, and real email search tools in OS4?!?

i was hoping my iPad life was going to get a LOT easier today. It certainly got better, but not nearly as much as I'd hoped. I still think these things are a matter of time, but it seems likely that that now means next year :mad::(

My one hope: the fact that they're delaying deployment of OS4 on the iPad until the Fall means they may yet still bake in some stuff that's iPad only. Like a file system, printing, and real email search tools.
 
Jobs said there were literally hundreds of new features. Maybe by fall the iPad will have these.
 
Maybe Multitasking on iPad means some applications can float? (probably not)

I really need to be able to open up a PDF and refer to its data on Numbers. As it stands I haven't touched that $10 app -- no use for applying numbers when I can't reference my e-mails and reports. I'm not going to print everything out just to jot down onto my Numbers iPad app.

Hope so. But printing and file systems are pretty big things. If they were going to include them I would think they would have said them during the keynote.


There wasn't even a "wait - one more thing" about the OS...

I think of all the things at the keynote today - Jobs was most excited and the most time was spent on iAds. For obvious reasons.
 
They covered 7 functions. Seven out of hundereds. Go to the sdk and find out If you want to be informed.

You guys crack me up :D

First of all, he *did* specifically talk about enhanced email, and mentioned numerous aspects of that. So you don't think he would've slipped searching into that section?

Second, re: file system...if a file system doesn't count as a tentpole (over iBooks on the iPhone!) then i don't know what to say...

One word. Macbook.
 
The whole event was really centered around the iPhone and the iPod touch, there was little mention of the iPad. I have a feeling this was intentional, Apple wants to make the Phone/Touch platform on different level from the iPad. Since the iPad version of 4.0 is delayed until later, i would imagine Apple to specifically talk about 4.0 on the iPad after the whole iPhone 4 stuff dies down.

By that argument, you could satiate the Flash-haters by saying, "Macbook." Satisfy the tetherers by "Macbook", and the "it's a giant iPod touch" people with "Macbook."

I have a MBP. I don't want to carry it everywhere I go.

Why even release a Numbers app, if you're going to skrimp on functionality? Spend $10 just so you can correct a few misspellings on a spreadsheet and send it back?

Apple has gone through great lengths to completely hide the file system from users. I seriously doubt they are going to expose it now.

With better content creation apps (ie, iWork), printing is only a matter of time (IMHO). With Snow Leopard, you can now only download the printer drivers that you actually use, so storage space isn't nearly as much of an issue. I would guess that Apple would go with a similar system.

Depends what you mean by 'expose.' I don't necessarily need a Finder with crazy unlimited nested folders and blah blah blah. But some type of simple, elegant organization tools - AND the ability to pass documents from app to app without creating multiple instances of the document - would go a looooooooooooooooooooooooong way.

Like cut and paste, and multi-tasking, Apple seems to have figured out a nice way to handle it. Pretty sure if they put their minds to it they could do the same with a "file system" of sorts.

1) Why on EARTH did you expect access to the file system when it's very very clear that the entire concept of the iPad (and iPhone and iPod Touch) is built around moving away from that concept? That's been obvious from the first time we saw the iPhone, it's not going to change any time soon and you bloomin' well knew that when you bought the iPad.

2) Sorry but what do you mean by 'real e-mail search tools'? I thought the email app (or spotlight) already did searching? Or is this a feature that's high on your personal list of changes but right at the bottom of the average user?

3) Printing.... is an interesting one. I can see this being done but not just yet. Too complicated to manage and then you have a driver issue to worry about which is, again, in stark contrast to what the iPad is supposed to be. Maybe if Apple work out a decent way of hiding the printer from the device so you print to a PC with a simple file and THAT dumps to the printer.

One last thing... why are you mad? Seriously, you bought a device in the full and certain knowledge of what it could or could not do. None of this was hidden from you. If you buy in anticipation of features and then don't get them when you want them then, and sorry to say this, you've got no-one to blame but yourself.

File system: Agree. He was discussing major features. File system would be a very major feature. Zero chance this is in OS4 but not mentioned. Given the mission, I have no expectation of an exposed file system.

But seriously, you make up a wishlist and get mad when you don't get it, and the other guys crack you up?

I have a wishlist (windows SDK please) as well, but I don't get mad when they don't show up, because I have no expectation that wishing will make it so.

1) Don't get bogged down by the term 'file system' the way we think of them today. What I mean is: a way to organize files, and pass them from app to app (rather than create multiple instances of the file which is what happens now, and is ridiculous). I'm sure Apple could come up with a simple, elegant way to do these things. See: Folders for the apps, multi-tasking, and cut and paste.

2) Searching within the body of emails (instead of just from, to, subject), and within subfolders instead of only within the current folder

BTW I'm angry b/c of the use I want out of the iPad - primary computer. I will still use it as such. It will simply not be as easy - for now - as I'd hoped.
 
I want to be able to open files from drop box - using pages. I then want to print these files to my wireless MFC printer. That is all I want and I am golden and I can truly dump my macbook pro. Until then, I still need to chug the macbook with me to some places.

This reminds me a lot of the 'all I want to do is stream Pandora in the background' gripes. Simple seeming uses that really shouldn't be excluded.

Hopefully it's all just a matter of time.
