My dad's company purchased a G5 Xserve last week. Is it a mistake?

They don't have an immediate need, but are anxious to get started with a Mac transition.

Does anyone have any thoughts? The server came today and I don't want them to open it.

I'm almost sure there will be new Intel Xserves announced along with new
"MacPros" at WWDC next month. I'd wait, myself.

I don't think anyone knows for sure.

I suspect until Intel starts hipping a more powerful chip (Conroe? Woodcrest? I don't follow all that), that we won't see an Intel XServe.

That's just it though, Woodcrest has been released.

Does anyone know if the only change will be the processor? In other words, what could be better about an Intel Xserve besides speed?

*stares lustfully at G5 Xserve box*

I'm guessing that the form factor will be the same, but with Woodcrest out, I
still believe we will hear something at WWDC.

Well, there's a lot of design that goes into a new processor and making sure it works with an extremely low failure rate.
I too expect a similar form factor.

With Woodcrests currently shipping, I was expecting Apple to have already unveiled a new Xserve. I suppose that it is a big deal and Apple will release it along side the Mac Pro at WWDC.

It's too close, it could be tomorrow... I'm going to recommend they return the G5.

EDIT: I just realized, it's BTO. Is there any sneaky way to return it?

I think you'll only have to give up a 10% restock fee.

DUDE; it's a SERVER. If a Sawtooth G4 can handle thousands of hits I think a G5 (slightly less powerful than intel's new Xeon) can handle anything you throw at it just fine.

I wouldn't call 80% faster at 30% less power slight. :p I want them to get the most for their money, this server needs to last a decade!

Seems almost silly to return the G5 now you've got it. I think buying it in the first place was possibly a mistake, but it's here now and being late in the G5 Xserve generation it may well be more reliable and trustworthy than the Intel Xserves will be immediately after release. I mean, hell, look at the 15.4" MBP!
