Been trying to figure this one out myself, and I'm completely stumped. The directory for the Documents and Desktop Folder now show listed as stemming from iCloud. There doesn't seem to be a way to revert to being local only. This is looking bad.... I don't want all my documents in the cloud!

The Documents under iCloud are stored locally but you can't access /User/iCloud Drive. I don't know why, but even with the normal iCloud Drive you can't. So there's that...

EDIT: Also to disable it you go to Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive and disable the sync Desktop and Documents. Your documents are going to still be in the iCloud Drive folder, but the Documents folder goes back to its old place. You then have to move everything from iCloud Drive folder to Documents. Its essentially the same as you would do if you want to uninstall Dropbox...

From what I can see Documents and Desktop are where they've always been:

/Users/username/Documents
/Users/username/Desktop

They are still real directories, and not symlinks.

If you drag "Desktop" or "Documents" in iCloud Drive to a terminal window, it will enter the above.

Interesting, inside the local store for iCloud Drive:

/Users/username/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs

there is a symlink "Desktop" pointing to /Users/username/Desktop, same for Documents.

So the data is where it's always been; there's just a symlink in your CloudDocs directory that makes it sync to iCloud.

So how does a Time Machine document "roll back" work now with Documents and Desktop stored in iCloud?

(Example: I enter Time Machine to restore and overwrite a Pages document modified today with the same document from 3 days ago but with different data in it, I should expect to see that document with the modified date of 09/18/16 in my iCloud Documents folder now instead of the 09/21 version presumably?)

As far as I can tell last changed, local or iCloud, is the master. In your scenario the 9/18 file restored from time machine would be uploaded to icloud.

Thanks, I'm betting on that myself. I've made duplicate backups just in case while I test all scenarios over the next few weeks.

I Carbon Copy Cloner with revisions nightly, plus Desktop and Documents to iCloud, plus Documents to OneDrive. I think I should be fine :)

I've heard nothing but good comments about CCC so will likely try it at some point. I've been running a TM backup along with two manual backups on EXT drives left disconnected after updating sensitive docs that have changed.

I don't really have anything bad to to say about Time Machine that isn't more a function of the limited capabilities of HFS+. When AFPS matures and snapshots and so on are used in lieu of UNIX hard links I will almost certainly return.

May your data be safe! :)

Yep, looking forward to its roll out next year!

Gotta say TM hasn't failed me yet the few times I've had to use it but I have those manual backups as well as an offsite and cloud backup just in case. (I suffered a major data loss *once* back in my college days and vowed it would never happen again;-)

I soon realised I'd made a mistake in opting for 'Documents in iCloud', and here's what I did to sort it out. There may be better ways though...

1. Go into System Preferences > iCloud and click on the 'Options' button against iCloud Drive.
2. Un-tick 'Desktop & Documents Folders' (You will receive a warning at this stage that documents will 'only be visible in iCloud' or something, which is a bit scary, but apply it anyway.
3. When I did the above a 'local' Documents folder reappeared in my Finder window sidebar.
4. And then, I'm afraid, the only thing I found that I could do was laboriously copy & paste each of my Documents sub-folders from iCloud Documents into my local Documents. (And the Desktop too.)
5. Having got all my documents back where they belong, I then trashed the iCloud versions of Documents and Desktop.

It takes forever, though...:(

Good GAWD. I'm scared to do this now.
I think I'll wait on this one.
