It's been almost a year since the release of the M1 Macs and since then there have been zero, nada, nothing, zippo when it comes to updated AS. Wasn't one of the benefits of AS was the fast introduction to faster and faster chips? While the current AS is great in the low power arena scaling to more powerful AS seems to be taking an eternity. Very disappointed with how slowly Apple has been progressing with AS.

They are supposed to come within the next two months. There has been a widespread chip and display shortage which has setback the entire industry by months. There were rumors that AS updates would have happened at WWDC but those products got delayed, either because of chip shortages, display shortages, or manufacturing issues.

Also apple never said they would be updating their macs more often because of AS. That was something some people speculated. I expect annual updates to the most popular macs, and 18-24 month updates for higher-end, less popular macs.

For now, all of the most popular, consumer level macs have been updated to M1: MBA, MBP 13”, MM, iMac 24”

Nor has Apple stated updated AS will be out within the next two months. Yet here you are speculating like the some people you referred to.

Yeah, I know the most popular, consumer level Macs have been updated. That doesn't answer my question.

The primary motivation behind dumping Intel was not raw performance, but performance per watt. Apple couldn't build the types of Macs it wanted to using Intel's offerings. The 12" MacBook is a great example. It ran slowly and had mediocre battery life. Now we have a fanless MBA that performs quite well. The new 24" iMac is an indication of where Apple's industrial design is headed.

Everyone has been progressing slowly. Automakers are having to ship cars without features enabled, or lower their production volume. It's still incredibly difficult to get a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Supply chains for electronics are incredibly constrained right now and will likely continue to be so for the next year or so. Apple is usually pretty good about weathering these things, but they aren't immune. Instead of launching beside the new iPhones, the Watch Series 7 is shipping later. The iPhone is still Apple's primary revenue stream. Any other product launch will be delayed if it means keeping iPhones rolling off the line.

I would not be surprised to hear at the next Mac event that the transition to ASi will be stretched out for another six months or so.

Correct. Am I not allowed to speculate? I was just saying we have no idea if AS updates would happen more frequently. And also no credible report has made those claims.

Nobody on Macrumors actually knows the answer to your question, so I’m not sure what you expected to hear aside from rumors and peoples speculation?

One catches more flies with…whatever. Your question is one that can’t be answered by anyone who doesn’t have inside information, and if anyone who has such information was willing to share it we’d know already. People on MR are just sharing their thoughts and feelings, which is perfectly fine.

Only Apple CAN answer that question. Write an email to tcook@apple.com if you like, just don’t expect a response…

ive been in semiconductor/high tech product development for well over 20 years, if you guys think that a pandemic like we’ve been monitoring for 18+ months now has no impact to plans, you don’t have a clue

Most of us want all new Apple computer models based on more powerful AS that are extremely well tested given the processor changes, that's never fast.

At a minimum it's likely you might see something in Nov as its a year later. :)

Nor will Apple preannounce new chips. They rarely preannounce new products at all. What we have to go on are leaks and informed speculation from industry insiders mixed with more than a little rank speculation.

There are indications that new MacBook Pros were planned to come out earlier in the summer but were held up due to production delays in the mini-LED screens. Reports suggest that production is moving along now and we expect to see the new models in Oct or November. Those models are expected to include more CPU and GPU cores, support more memory and more ports to make them suitable to replace the existing Pro models.

There has been less information leaking on the larger iMacs and that suggest that they are a little further out.

This is probably a slower rollout than Apple originally planned but the pandemic has caused widespread disruptions to production lines and supplies. Hopefully that improves with the new year.

Have to be in sync with TSMC so earliest is end of 2021 for TSMC N4 (4nm) and mid 2022 for TSMC N3 (3nm).
