Where is this News Update coming from?!

I have an iPhone 6S Plus. It has no SIM card in it. It is not conencted to any Wi-Fi that I know of. It is an expensive camera!

So how is it that when I got back from the store and was taking out my "camera" from my pocket, I see a box with...

How else could my iPhone get a new news update unless it is connected to Apple or something?

(And if it is conencted to Apple of something, then I assume I am being tracked...)

My guess would be that you have previously connected to a WiFi hotspot away from your home (a coffee shop or similar) and walked past it whilst out and about. The phone remembered and connected when you were in that location.

Do you have a Mac and use iCloud to sync your Keychain? If so, you can look at the list of known networks on your computer and remove any you no longer want to access. I don’t know any way of doing this solely on your iPhone (or iPad, for that matter).

I don't use iCloud or my keychain.

The only way I could have connected to any Wi-Fi is if I bumped something while my iPhone was in my pocket, but I have never consciously connected to the Internet.

So since I got a news flash, does that mean I was connected tothe Internet? (I don't see how it couldn't mean that?!)

Is there a way to do forensics and see when/where/how I might have connected?

And is there a way to make sure I don't connect again?

(It freaks me out thinking Apple can track everywhere I go and every place I take pictures!!)

The simplest solution is probably to leave it in Airplane Mode unless you are specifically wanting to access the phone via WiFi. You can still have Bluetooth on with Airplane Mode if necessary.

I know next to nothing about smartphones, but one of the first things I looked at under Preferences or whatever was the WiFi and BlueTooth settings.

WiFi was set in Airplane Mode and Bluetooth was "On" but I turned it off.

Why not just turn off location services? You can do that just for the camera or globally. Settings -> Privacy - Location Services and choose what suits you.
