I'm ordering a 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM/500GB/SuperDrive/8800GS iMac next week and wanted to know where is the best place to order it from? OnSale.com and MacMall.com have it for $2194 shipped + you get a $100 mail-in rebate. Apple.com has it for $2199 + tax. Any other reputable stores?

Plus, if anything goes wrong with it, Apple could just tell you to deal with MacMall or where ever you got it from, which might leave you with a broken computer.
Get this one!
It's the same exact machine as the one your trying to get, and you'd save a couple hundred.
That way you can get Apple Care.
And your GOING to want to get Apple Care.
It's not worth not having it.

There is something to be said about ordering direct with Apple, but whats said above is rubbish. If you purchased from an authorized dealer you get the same warranty coverage as you would if you'd bought direct from apple. MacMall IS an authorized dealer.
I purchased from MacMall, and My Neighbor also did. He had some minor hardware issue with his superdrive and both the telephone support as well as the in-store support were superb. They fixed the drive AND also replaced the bezel around the screen when whoever replaced the drive scratched it.
As long as you're going with authorized dealers go with the best price.
Just remember if you want full 3 year telephone support to get the Applecare withing the first 90 days, otherwise just make sure to get Applecare within the first year.

While I know what you are trying to say the OP might misunderstand.
When you buy a Mac you get 90 days of free telephone support and a one year warranty. The phone support is basically for software issues and newbie questions about using a Mac. When you get Applecare it extends the telephone support and warranty out to 3 years after the Mac's purchase date.
You have one year from time of purchase to buy Applecare. Many wait until the year is almost up before buying Applecare because the warranty covers any hardware problems and they don't need the telephone support. If you do it that way you will not have free telephone support from the 90 day point to the date you purchase and activate Applecare, but will have it from that point on (up until 3 years after the original Mac purchase date).

I'm a federal employee and will order through their Federal Government Employee Purchase Program and I figure with tax it should be around $2,211.69 shipped. It's $17.69 more than MacMall and OnSale.com but I think it's worth dealing directly from Apple like you guys are saying...
