Hi there I am planning to buy a legally unlocked iphone because ill be travelling to 4 different countries in the nest 1 year and will want to use iphone everywhere.

Is there any help thread on buying a legally unlocked iphone 3g that will still have warranty and be able to connect to itunes and install updates and everything else that regular carrier locked phones can do?

If there is no thread please help me with my buying....ill be in Australia by end of this month, can I buy a legally authorized unlocked iphone with warrenty in Australia? How much is the price for the 8gig model?

Anticipating help from the forum!

It's not "illegal" to unlock the phone, in a criminal sense. It does violate Apple's policy regarding the phone, however. To do so is (in theory) to void the warranty.

I think you lose some functions when you unlock and swap carriers, like visual voicemail.

I could be wrong on both counts. Hope I haven't wasted your time.

Illegal always does not mean in a criminal sense :) isnt it? any agreement that is broken can be illegal!

Well all I want to know is where and how in Australia can I buy authorized/legally unlocked iphone 3g that wont loose its warrenty and that will allow me to connect to itunes sync my music (also my collection on the ipod) and then allow me to install firmware updates without any bricking.

I suppose that's right. Illegal as commonly used, though, means against a governmental law. I suppose you could use it describe breaking some other kind of rule. Though that might lead to confusion. :p

If you buy an iPhone in Australia, you can only have it serviced IN australia.

As far as I know in following countries iPhones can be bought "officially" unlocked:
Belgium
France
Australia
New Zealand

let me update the list a bit as well: :)

Hong Kong
Macau (where i am) <when i bought mine from the official carrier, they activated it for me straight away in the store. i have put in different sims from different mobile networks, they all work fine! (lucky me! as i travel very often.>
