My brother is heading to Chicago and Virginia later this month, and said he'd get me RAM for my pbook.

Where can he go to get Apple compatible RAM?

Chicago is a huge area. There must be dozens of places to get RAM. We have 3 or 4 Apple stores in the Chicago metro area for starters, plus big stores like MicroCenter, Fry's, and CompUSA. What Mac you have is important because each model takes a very specific type of RAM, there isn't one universal memory module for all Macs. All current Macs take industry standard RAM that isn't specific to Mac or PC, so you can find RAM at Best Buy and stores like that as well.

1gb of Apple RAM is over $300.

Crucial is selling 1gb at approx $200.

I have the 1.67 Pbook (RAM is DDR SDRAM PC2700) Will CompUSA and the others stock this type?

Yes, in abundance.

There is a gigantic warehouse-style store in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove. It's called Fry's Electronics. If coming from downtown Chicago, take I-290 west to I-355 north. Go north on I-355 and exit on Butterfield road east. Driving down I-355 you'll see the huge enormous "Fry's" building on the east side of the expressway. After getting off on Butterfield road east, turn right at the FIRST stoplight that is placed at an intersecting road, not a parking lot (but if memory serves me correct I think it is, in fact, the first stoplight). Go down a ways and you'll run into Fry's. They have SUPER CHEAP ram, as well as hard drives and other parts.

EDIT: Here is a map of the area.

EDIT #2: Oh yeah I-290 "becomes" I-88 halfway between Chicago and Downers Grove.

Holy crap! - Thanks dpaanlka

I think my brother might kill me if i present him with the map.
:D
But I guess its worth a try.
Dunno if the directions are gonna help though.

Maybe I should find out where he is staying first.
