i posted yesterday about being fed up with lag when launching applications. multiple people suggested that it was winterboard that was causing the lag.

so i decided to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 and re-quickpwn my phone. this time i did not install winterboard and instead decided to SSH icons over manually. i can say that after removing winterboard it's amazing how fast apps load; especially Notes, voice recorder, and shazam.

however, i have run into a few problems with reskinning my phone.

my old set up looked like this (although i removed all app names shortly after):

but my new set up at the moment looks like this:

where am i able to insert the background and icons for purchased apps? for whatever reason my weather icon will not change (/applications/weather.app then change icon.png). in addition, as you can see down by the dock, the top of the icons are getting cut off. same with the camera icon. why is that? they are the same icons i used before.

thanks!

It's in a diff spot for your apps. It's in /private/var/mobile/Applications. You'll see folders with long strings of letters and numbers. In each folder is the Application_Name.app folder and in there should be an icon.png file. :)

I don't think it's possible to replace App Store icons without using WinterBoard. If you want the app to work properly, that is.

I tried replacing App Store apps' icons manually, and always got a "This application cannot be opened" error shortly afterwards.

I've heard the App Store app icons are checked, or something? Don't quote me, but I've heard it somewhere.

It's just a .png file, not sure how Apple checks, if they even did. If you mean that they are signed, then no worries, because the whole idea of jailbreaking is that it lets you install unsigned code. :)

The poster above you is correct. There is some sort of check that happens with AppStore apps .png files that, when replaced, that app will no longer open and you will have to remove and reinstall that app.

Honestly, if people want to customize, they should stick with Winterboard...by itself, the lag is negligible, when you pile on tons of other crap with it, especially lots of apps that depend on MobileSubstrate, then the lag starts to become noticeable. Plus, I can't imagine that it's fun to have to edit stock files over and over and over again when it comes time to update the firmware.

Given what I know so far of the file system, etc, I am finding this hard to be true, but I will test this when I get a chance. :)

I personally like Winterboard myself and can put up with an extra bit of lag, but if someone wanted to do without, it's not that hard. One could write a custom script to change the icons, sounds, etc to copy to teh correct locations.

I understand, but I'm going by past experience.
Everytime I tried to replace Twittelator's icon, I got an error when I tried to open it shortly afterwards.
It's the icon, I tell you.
