I was looking to get an iPhone (First Generation) and use it as a iPod with WiFi, 'cause currently I have the old crappy First gen iPod Nano, and it's doing poorly on me. So I need a new iPod, and I thought what better way to get a new iPod, get an iPhone! Because I currently don't have a cell phone either, but I don't want to use it as a phone until later on because I don't want to pay for the internet bills and data fees monthly.. I want the iPhone more instead of an iPod Touch because... I like iPhone's design more.. I can use it as a phone if I want to.. It has bluetooth, even though it's crappy.. It has speakers built in it, so I don't have to plug in headphones just to show my friends some songs..

So, my question today is, How do you unlock or jailbreak or whatever you call it to get an iPhone to work as a iPod/ PDA/ WiFi device only? I don't want AT&T nor T-Mobile service on the iPhone yet.. But when I want to later on, I can simply put the iPhone SIM back in the card slot and use it as a phone and start paying for it.

Thanks in advance!!

I recommend ZiPhone. Start with a freshly restored (or out of box) iPhone with 1.1.4 firmware. Download, install, and open ZiPhone from the above link. Use the "Unlock, Jailbreak & Activate" button under iPhone. Wait 4.5 minutes, and you're done.

You can now use your iPhone without a SIM card as a sort of "iPod Touch + camera + microphone". When you're within range of WiFi, you'll be able to use all features except of course calling and SMS.

If and when you want to use a SIM, just slip any SIM into the iPhone and start calling/texting/surfing the net via GPRS/EDGE.

But when I slip in my SIM, won't I have to actually "activate" my iPhone with a carrier to put the Sim in? So I can actually have a plan, xD I don't want to get charged for each kb sent and a very expensive bill

Only use ZiPhone if you want a broken phone. The firmwares it creates are unstable. Use iLiberty.

But you're going to be paying an awful lot of money to get an "iPod touch" out of a first gen, since they're still going for $400 or so on ebay.

xD I'm doubting many people will buy those models now that a 3G is coming..

I'm finding and offering some friends some deals for their old models, either that or AT&T might have refurbs on old models for cheaper prices hopefully

Is there a way to actually "activate" the phone again if I do fake activate it? Because I know you can put in an activated SIM card right after fake activating and still use it as a phone again, but it won't be under an 'iPhone plan' it'll just be under a regular phone, and I know iPhone has unlimited access to the web, so I don't want to be billed for my data transfers unless I actually have a plan to really activate it with.
