I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro with OS El Capitan (the highest I can go) and in order to delay buying a new 2018 MacBook Pro, I just want to start editing videos on my current one. But where can I get the 10.1.6 version of iMovie from? Thank you

Mine is a mid 2009. I would need to have a 2010 in order to run Sierra.
Did you even check the thread I linked to, states early to mid 2009 MacBookPro runs Sierra with no issues.
I'm running Sierra very nicely on my 2008 MacPro 3,1 as can be seen in the attached photo, even though Apple only supports El-Capitan on this model.
I've even tried High Sierra, but I'm not impressed with it so I stick with Sierra.

Yes, I did. I would like to try that solution at a later time. What I would like to do now is just to get the iMovie app just to get some work out of the way. when thats done, I will be happy to try this hack.
