I am interested in learning how to make apps for Mac OS X and the iPhone but I have no coding experience whatsoever. I understand I should probably learn C first. What C books (or sites) do people recommend for a complete newbie? What books could teach C and Xcode? Once I learn C, should I be able to understand apple's page on objective c?

Yes.

The best books on C are "A Book on C" and "The C Programming Language" if you ask me.

You don't really need to use Xcode when you are learning C. Stick to a text editor like Text Wrangler (it's free) and the command line it is much easier and saves having confusing moments because the IDE (Xcode) has hidden a setting somewhere that you don't understand.
