I remember reading somewhere that you could tell where your iMac was built and would ship from. Can someone remind me how to find out that information?

I don't have my iMac yet so I'm not sure what the serial number is. On the Apple store it says that it hasn't shipped yet, but I thought there was some code or product number that showed where the computer was being manufactured and where it would ship from. I would like to know this because if it ships from California it will arrive at my house sooner than if it ships from China.

Didn't you get a tracking number for the delivery service?

If the machine is BTO, then it will be shipped from China.

You'll know when it ships... Won't you.
Patience is a virtue.
CTO systems have been coming from CA.

I don't think they give me a tracking number until it actually ships. My iMac will be built to order...so I guess from China...bummer :(

My BTO 27" i5 just shipped from CA. Serial number lookup says built in the US.

Once it ships you can pull the serial number off of the receipt available on the order status webpage.

Thanks for correcting that, maybe as I do not live in the USA, I never noticed that. Where is the factory in California and is it Apple's own or is it a contracted one like Foxconn?

Fedex tells me that it started out in Sacramento but I'm not sure where it was assembled. It could also depend on your level of customization. I've seen more and more people reporting the 27's shipping from Cali. Not sure on the 21's

Apple website has said my order is "prepared for shipment" for the last 24 hours. What is the delay!?

My 27" 2.93 that I purchased right from the Apple store said "Assembled in USA" right on the outside of the box. It was not a custom order... just a standard 2.93 i7 that they had in stock.

Call apple and they can tell you where it was built. CTO machines typically come from Sheng Zheng CN or something like that. Dont think i spelled that right lol but yeah somewhere in China. Custom configured machines usually take 1-3 business days to ship and are delivered within 1-5 days of it shipping. So it may be prepared to ship for some time but just because it stays in that stage, does not necessarily mean delay

 If they started making all their machines in the US I'd be thrilled. Then when people attack Macs for being expensive we can say "Yeah? Well my computer is made in USA, can you say the same about yours?"

Woohoo my iMac shipped...and it looks like it was built in California. It shipped from Newark, CA and will be at my house tomorrow. So happy!

Assembled is different from made...

The components are most likely made in China or other parts of Asia :p

Plus, wouldn't you prefer your delicate electronic components being assembled by people with small fingers rather than those with bigger ones? ;)

my 21.5" CTO replacement shipped 2 days ago and it was delivered to my work today. so it couldn't have been made in china.

IIRC if 75% of the manufacturing cost is from stuff made in USA it counts as Made in USA, in the case of the Mac Pro that is basically the MoBo, CPU, RAM and Case
