Where would I notice the performance boost?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to upgrade my 12-core Mac Pro in the near future my main line of work is centered around adobe premiere pro, after effects and cinema 4d.

What do you guys think I would see an improvement in performance? Option 1, upgrading my current graphics card to a qaudro card or option 2, upgrading the processors to 3.33ghz?

Current set up:

12-core 2.4ghz (2.67 turbo)
40gb ram
512gb apple SSD
120gb scratch SSD
Ati 5770 graphics card

There is information on "hacking" the PP line to use any graphics card. Search for that info, hack the line and see if your 5770 is listed and performs better.
This is not the photo of that screen. I used the PP6 demo to test R3D and h.264 comparing software v. CUDA.

If your 5570 performs better after the hack use the money for processors.
With my Quadro 4000, Raid and "old" 3,1 I did not have any problems with any footage. Zero transcoding or rendering!

can you explain more about the hack? i have not heard of this before. perhaps i should give this a shot! could there be any harm done to my graphics card if i were to proceed with the hack?

I use Avid media Composer and only tried the demo of PP6 summer 2012.
I don't remember the menu but there is a list of "qualified" graphics cards used by PP pertaining to CUDA. "They" call it a hack but it's just manipulating the list and adding "other" graphic cards.
Search YouTube and the web/net for the info on how to do it. It's out there. I just happened to have a Quadro 4000 and it was on the list.

I ended up coming across the tutorial to enable the open cl capabilities of ATI cards. However, it woks better with the 6000 series then the 5000. I was having weird glitches and the program having to be force quit. So I quickly removed my card from the list to prevent any further problems. Looks like just getting a cuda enabled card in the first place may be my best bet

Hey, slightly OT, but how well does media composer utilize multiple cores? And does it use GPU acceleration at all?

GPU-The only usage of the GPU is for fx on the PC side. (minimum!)

Avid is new to the 64bit scene. They have not rewritten their engine to really use ram, cores and gpu's like a "modern" NLE should!

Avid is playing catch up!
