Tonight I inserted a dvd into the slot at the exact moment my (running on battery) macbook went into sleep mode. The disc went in, but without the usual noises. Now it isn't registering anywhere on the system (Finder, Desktop, Disc Utility). It's as if the disc has evaporated - eject does nothing, it doesn't boot the disc, make any noises or indicate action of any kind. The drive is acting as if nothing there, but it won't allow another disc to be loaded (yes I was very careful to hold onto disc 2 when trying!)

I've plundered the forums but all solutions seem to be based on the disc being visible as a drive. And I've tried everything suggested without success. Is it possible that I've managed to insert the disc somewhere ABOVE the drive? A bit of prodding hits resistance there, but that may just be the edge of the drive I guess.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any/all wisdom gratefully received....

The only way I know of to fix this is to restart the Mac and hold down the trackpad button. This tells the Mac to eject any disc that is in there.
