Where's the dmg

So I downloaded and installed the M Lion for two weeks everything running rather smoothly. Can not complain too much for $19 investment. Now I am wondering where the dmg is and what do I do if one day I need to re-install the operating system.Is there a emergency disk/ repair disk I can burn or something.
Any ideas?

Also, if you have a mac made in the past 3 years or so, it should have Internet Recovery, so you don't have to burn anything. All this has been gone over many times before though and is also easy to google.

If you bought it and then updated to ML it is not on your HD/SSD, and believe me I think this is stupid, now you need to download it again when you do a restore, but there seem to be ways to get the download.

Not everybody has a fast and unlimited internet connection, I think Apple is stupid not to include the whole OS on the Recovery HD instead of just a base system, it's only 4 GB more than it is now, plain stupidity.

OS X includes a new feature that lets you restore system software to your Mac with just a few clicks, without having to bother with install discs or drives.

4GB is a rather large slice out of a 64GB air. Heck, even the 128GB air. Your point is valid for macs with larger storage such as the iMac though. They should definitely have made a 4GB partition for those computers.

Have to agree here, didn't think of the 64 GB air but they should definitely do this on Mac's with 256 GB and more.

No, I bought a Mini just recently and I checked and have to buy it, no way since I already have it, so this is not (always) true.

I am not the only one which has this "Problem", just yesterday someone from Thailand had exactly the same and that's why I say this, I have it so what you say is not always true, I can not download it from the Store, not only that, it's been mentioned here many times that the download from the App store does not work on a mini.

First I have to apologize for being a newbie to mac. This question perhaps has being asked for many times. Yah,I was given this dead(liquid spilled,corrosive,unkindly abused,must be flew in the air for a few times)mid 2009 mbp. It puts the installer DMG in the Applications folder. Also, you may want to copy the DMG to a USB key or something, because it will be deleted as part of the install process.

What you need to do is open Finder, go to the Applications folder and right-click the installer and select to show contents. That will give you the DMG. I suggest you copy it elsewhere. Then follow this for creating a USB install media for Mountain Lion.

This. Apple doesn't seem you want you to get at the DMG, but luckily it's pretty easy to rip it out of the installer app.

I think your problem is that your Mini came with ML to begin with. The ML download on the App Store does work on the Mini; you just haven't actually purchased ML with your Apple ID because it was originally installed on your Mini. Thus, you're left unable to download it. Your only options become: 1) buy it and get your DMG, 2) use Internet Recovery, or 3) find a friend who will give you a copy of the DMG; this would be sort-of legal since you do have the right to reinstall the software. I agree that it's kind of stupid they don't include the full system in the recovery drive, but as a MBA user I completely agree with the decision.

I wouldn't say that Apple doesn't want you to get at the dmg. They fully explain how to download Lion and ML, and make bootable recovery media, in document HT4718.

Re not being able to install a downloaded copy of ML 10.8.2 on a mini, it should not be done on the late 2012 Minis, or the late 2012 iMacs. The version of 10.8.2 installed on those machines includes customized drivers not available on the Store's version of 10.8.2. When 10.8.3 is released, it should contain those drivers.
