Let's see... we have the:

Mac Mini
iMac
Mac Pro
MacBook
MacBook Pro
MacBook Air

but where on earth is our normal, nothing particularly special,

Mac

?

(Just a random question I had. I'm not going to suggest apple make some kind of mid-size tower that's like a headless iMac and call it a Mac as countless others already have. Sorry if this is the wrong forum to place it in. Feel free to move it.)

Where's the Mac??

Lets compare product lines:

Mac Mini
iMac
Mac Pro
MacBook
MacBook Pro
MacBook Air

iPod nano
iPod [classic]
iPod touch
iPod Shuffle
iPhone

we dont call the main iPod "pod", so we shouldn't call the main computer "mac"

I think Apple considers its iMac as its Mac.

Yep.

Look at the differences:

If you ignore the age and speed/capacity/features of the computers, they're basically the same thing.

They're both personal computers. An all in one personal computer.

The iMac is the Macintosh of the 21st Century (Well, 1998... but it was close). The 'Mac' of the internet generation.

I think that's why there is no plain 'Mac'; because they have one... just with an 'i' in front :)

Your logic fails.

They're all called iPods.

Whereas in their computer line, they arn't all called iMacs.

Otherwise they'd be called the:

iMac Mini (... where did the small screen iMacs ever go? Oh well, I like my 24".)
iMac
iMac Pro (an easy access imac?)
iMacBook
iMacBook Pro
iMacBook Air

but clearly they arn't.

Oh, and I'm not saying they should.

I'm just bringing up the fact that apple doesn't make a Mac.

Oh, and to the person who posted a picture of the non-apple Mac... you also PHAIL!

It's called the OpenMac. (Well, they changed the name to OpenComputer... but we'll all remember it by what they initially tried to call it... just like with the iTV which is officially called the :apple:TV.)

The "i" represents things like innovation and that sort of stuff.

When iMac first came out, Jobs said the i represented Internet. The iMacs basis was for a simple easy way to access the internet and just an easy computing experience.

Mac by itself would be confusing... just leave it alone.
