I'm looking to buy a high capacity SSD for my 6-core MP (arriving Friday). I'm looking at these two Crucial drives:

A for $399, and B for $530.

Is the more expensive drive worth it? Why?

M4. Because it is cheaper, newer, faster, and proven to be fairly reliable.

Yes, i did pretty good with the m4. Updated the firmware with the cd boot technique.
The one glitch it seems, is that my 1,1 freezes on restart. But if i shut it down, that start it up - there is no problem

You mean it's not Mac compatible out of the box? Why the firmware update?

It is still a basic drive and should be compatible with any OS out of the box once you format it.

AFAIK, a firmware update would just fix some bugs with whatever controller Crucial is using. From what I know, those bugs would likely be apparent no matter what OS you are running.

And if you are just choosing between those, the M4 will be the best.

The m4 did work out of the box - i tried the firmware update to address the restart issue.
The restart issue may due to another varient (presence of other drives, etc.) I did try a pram reset. Will dig a little deeper later on.

I have an older 128GB Crucial SSD in my 1.1 that I got about a year and a half ago ("Orange label", like the "B" SSD I linked to above). I've not had any problems with it whatsoever. If there is any chance the newer one has some issues (e.g., freezing on restart), I'll gladly spend the extra $131.

you could test the m4, and return it. I just don't feel like driving all the way back to fry's

I have two M4 256GB SSDs, both using firmware v.309, with absolutely no issues since February. I've read that the more recent firmware (000f) was causing some problems for some.

Just something to note is that some Crucial M4's and C300's seem to have random issues with freezing. Not all do, but apparently some do, a google search for "Crucial C300 Freeze" or "Crucial M4 Freeze" appears to bring up quite a few examples.

I myself use a Crucial C300 256 in my MBP, and it gets these annoying random freezes. Even though I updated the firmware, it still gets it. Supposedly there's a fix under windows, but I didn't look to see if there is an easy fix for OS X. On the other hand though, I have another C300 256 that I use for games, and it doesn't freeze at all.

Just felt like putting that out there, since it is something that can happen with the Crucial's.

The restart issue is gone. Think it was because i cloned my original drive, and the computer just had to get used to it.

Running fast with no problems now

No problems here either.

I's so nice to have all this breathing room! I was really struggling to keep my 128GB SSD from filling up. Now I won't have to give the Downloads Folder a second thought for at least a year, and that's after boosting my LR cache to 60 GB :)

akadmon - impressions on that new hex now that you've had it for a day :)

See my 5,1 vs 1,1 benchmarks thread. Overall I'm happy, though the performance boost isn't as big as I thought it would be (my 1,1, thanks to the SSD I have in it, is no slouch), Which only goes to prove that Geekbench scorers aren't worth the electrons they are riding on.

Maybe it would've been faster had you got that extra 16 GB of RAM you were trying to scam Apple into "throwing in for free" ?

I thought the C300 was end of life and replaced by the M4 anyway? I'd go with the M4, I have the 512GB one in my 2011 MacBook Pro, it's quick. Also have a Samsung 256GB 830 in my PC, which is fast too, fast enough I don't sleep my PC any more.
