you need to tweek the settings in the preference panel.

mine looks like this, which is pretty close to what you have..

anyone know how to save my buddy list style?

You can change any style to look like that. In the appearance tab, next to colour theme, click on the "customize..." button. Change the background to whatever colour your desktop is, or something close if it is many colours. If your desktop is a solid colour, you can leave the opacity in the appearance tab at 100%. If it's a picture, play with the opacity settings until it is to your liking.

As for the buddy list tweak with the colors and the Transparency to get the effects that you are looking for. It's pretty easy.
