Which Apps Most Use the GPU

I have been wondering, which apps will most benefit from the GPU, (not including gaming).

With products like the Akitio eGPU, where am I going to see a breathtaking performance difference?
Will it make rendering faster?

For example, will it make MPEGStreamClip batch render faster? Will I be able to faster convert Red Camera's raw rushes into Apple ProRes format?
