I'm planning to preorder an iPhone XR but am unsure which carrier model to get. I currently am using tmobile but may switch to another carrier soon as my data connection has not been that great. Not 100% sure which carrier I'll switch to and wanted to get a model that's compatible with any carrier. Anyone know which models for the XR are compatible with all the carriers in the US?

Asking because I don't see an unlocked version as an option currently in the Apple Store App.

Just get the sim-free model which guaranteed it is unlocked (some carriers require you to use it a few days before unlocking even if it is paid full) since this year there is only one (one model) modem chip manufacturer, Intel.

In the US, there will be only a single model. So pick the one that is locked to your carrier and ask the carrier to unlock (many will unlock after 1-2 months).

OP asked about the XR and in the US the sim free model is not available on pre order day or during its launch. So OP only has the option to get the carrier model. So really sim free is not an option right now. Buying any carrier model at any Apple.com ir Apple store and paying full price is unlocked and can be used on any carrier. Yes carrier model purchased at any carrier store may require an u lock request after certain days.

All models sold directly from Apple are unlocked if paid in full, and they all work on any carrier. So pick whichever one you want.

All devices sold directly from Apple that are fully paid or on the IUP program are fully unlocked.

Good to know, I've heard this from a couple places but haven't been able to confirm. Did apple state that all the XR models are universally compatible somewhere?

Do the T-mo full price one. The others apparently require log-in information, but buying the T-mo one on apple.com doesn't require that. That's what I'm going with to get unlocked (don't have an account with any of the big 4).

Doesn’t matter if you’re paying in full. All have the same modem and come unlocked.
As for the modem, yes all are intel. But as for the unlocked, it just depends. If you are paying in full price and ordering it from Apple.com or purchasing it outright at the Apple Store then yes it comes unlocked. But if it's from a carrier store than those would typically be locked and would have to wait a certain amount of days before customer can request an unlock.

Actually I believe that has changed since the iPHone X, for other carriers like Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T, you can choose the Activate Later option seen below:

Which won't require you to enter your carrier info.
