Which Compact Digital Camera?...

...Hello All.

Searched the forums and a thousand review sites for a new compact digi.

Want 5.0 mp, and it has to be small and preferably black.

Narrowed it down to the Nikon S1 and an Olympus Muji Mini S.

The Nikon is the more expensive of the two here in the UK but I just can't decide. Really like the look of the Muji but it is a little "girly" and I'm not sure it's a capable camera.

Would like a decent Macro, but it'll be mainly used for just shooting basic stuff. Looked at the Canon SD500? But that's out of the price range.

Any pointers would help a lot, beginning to get bored of trying to decide now.

What about the Canon SD400 or new SD450?
With the release of the SD450, the price of the 400 has become very reasonable here in the US.
As best as I can tell, the primary difference is LCD size (2.0" vs 2.5"), but other than that, very similar cameras.

I don't know much about the Nikon or Olympus, so can't help you there.

check the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P200 (7.2 MP)

for around 210-220 pounds i think its a decent camera with a 1 GB memory it would be a great buy , my friend has one and it produces great picx. If u want something smaller in size and is 5 MP check out the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC T7 (around 250 pounds)

i dont know why but i like sony cams , my brother has a pentax its also amazing but its huge .

and u can always have a look at canon, they r quality cams.

Have a flick through DPreview.com to read the reviews of the ones suggested here. Also have a flick through some of the galleries on pbase.com so you can see how they perform in real life.

Finally, go to a store and make the final call on how they actually feel in your hands.

Another to consider (although it's not black) is the 6 megapixel Fuji F10 which gets great reviews in terms of low noise,produces some great shots and has a very long battery life. But its macro performance is apparently average without some manual tweaking. It's available for £214 on Amazon - you haven't told us what your budget is which makes life slightly tricky! I'm currently debating the compact/zoom options for my next camera and the F10 (F11 due out in November with better macro capabilities and more manual options) is my favoured compact option.

Made a decision and opted for the Canon ixus 50 (SD 400).

Had a good look at various suggestions last night and it felt like the right decision, every sales guy I spoke to said "yeah the Canon for me" everytime.

Ordered from Pixmania with a promotional code and I've saved nearly £50.00 from the prices I saw in stores last night.

That's a great camera; you're going to love it!
For memory cards, I usually look at several places: Amazon, Buy.com, Costco, Walmart.com to name a few. Also consider places like Crucial & DataMem - they offer the cards as well.

If the camera has a rapid-fire mode that you will be using, consider spending the extra to get a higher-speed card (e.g. SanDisk Ultra II) in order to be able to shoot rapidly. If that's not necessary, then you're probably fine with a standard SD card.

Camera arrived early this afternoon.

Wow!

Absolutely love it, fantastic picture quality and so small. Feels like it's been put together pretty well, Macro is very impressive for a small compact.

Already ordered a 512mb Kingston Elite SD Card and some screen protector.

I'll post some pics tomorrow, thanks for the recommendation gents.

Here we go, two of them indoors Macro setting with no flash, the snail is outside with the flash on.

Tweaked the indoor shots in Photoshop (Levels, Hue and Saturation) as the light source is about four feet infront from a vintage 1970's Lamp and it's orange. But the snail shot needed no tweaking at all.

I'll get some shots outside today I think but the weather is pretty grim.
