Theres alot of discussion about this, so I thought it would be cool to see some actual poll results.

I wouldn't rule out Conroe for the iMac, depending on its thermal characteristics and whether Apple can get it to run nice and cool. It is a desktop chip, after all, and the iMac is a desktop computer.

The successor to the PowerMac will have a nice pair of Woodcrests at the high end and possibly Conroe for a low-end, cheaper model.

As I said in the other thread, Conroe in an iMac will be a struggle...

2.1GHz G5 (The one found in iMacs, 970FX) - <55W
Dual-core G5s (970MP) - <100W

Merom - 35W
Conroe - 65W
Conroe XE - 95W
Woodcrest - 65W
3GHz Woodcrest - 80W

It's more power-hungry than the 2.1GHz G5 and that might be a problem. Of course, they could skip out Conroe all together, or better yet, bring back the Power Mac Cube and chuck it in there.

I'm guessing Merom at least to start with for the imacs...they'd need a totally new board for Conroe.

For the Mac Pros, here's what I'm thinking:

Low end: Conroe XE 2.93ghz

Midrange: Woodcrest 3ghz

High end: Dual Woodcrest 3ghz for the Quad.

Then by this time next year, move it up. Low end either the 3ghz woodcrest or the conroe XE, midrange either dual woodcrests for the quad or single Tigerton quad-core, and for the high end Dual Tigerton quad-core chips for an OCTO!

Then in 2008 have Dunningtons...rumors say this may have between 4 and 32 cores per chip! I hope its 8....

Hate to break this to you but the Conroe XE costs more than the 3GHz Woodcrest

Hm....are you sure? I thought they were the same price- Iremember reading $999 for the top levels of each type.

Maybe then we'll see it with all woodcrest: dual core 2.66ghz woodcrest/dual core 3ghz woodcrest/2x dual core 3ghz woodcrests.

Or we may see the 2.66ghz Conroe at the low end instead?

I think personally that apple will definitely want to show they've made 3ghz for the quads and maybe the duals.

Personally, I hope they stick with the laptop processors in the iMac and slim it down even more. Perhaps even get rid of the chin! The iMac is plenty fast with Yonah and I think that the benefit from having a cooler computer (i.e. quieter, possibly thinner) would out-weigh the speed advantages for most consumer level purchasers. Imagine if the iMac Core 2 Duo were redesigned to be closer in thickness to the iMac G4 but without the footprint. They could even go back to clear casing which would be awesome IMHO...

I know it will never happen but it would be cool...

Conroe XE is $999, 3GHz Xeon "Woodcrest" isn't... http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2563 :)

What's not to say they wont come out with a Mac... and a MacPro.. the mini is cute but not powerful enough as is, either the min will need to get the Core 2 duo or you will see a consumer desktop other then the imac for the first time in a while.
